Resident Evil 9 could be an open-world game, it’s been claimed.

According to X user ‘Dusk Golem’, who has a long track record of reporting information about video games before it has been made public, Resident Evil 9 is being developed as an open-world game.

“Dragon’s Dogma 2 expanded RE Engine functionality for open-world games, the two other games building on this tech is Monster Hunter Wild & Resident Evil 9.”

While Resident Evil Village allowed players to traverse between several larger, semi-open areas, the main series has yet to experiment with a fully open world.

Monster Hunter Wild, the sequel to Monster Hunter World, was announced in December 2023. The game is set for release in 2025, although Capcom has shared few details about the game. More information about the game will be made public in summer 2024, according to Capcom.

Capcom has yet to publically announce the next mainline entry in the Resident Evil series, nor has it announced the next of its remakes.

It was revealed earlier this week that Capcom was Metacritic’s highest-rated publisher in 2023, based on the quality of its releases last year.

However, that hasn’t stopped its latest release, Dragon’s Dogma 2, coming under criticism.

While the game received glowing pre-release reviews, following today’s launch it has had a ‘mixed’ reception on Steam, where just 40% of over 9,300 user reviews are positive.

Players discovered on Friday that there are 21 separate DLC purchases available on day one. Disappointment appears to stem from the fact that some of them are for things that players feel should be easier to obtain in-game for free.

Could work, I suppose. Maybe they'll do something like RE6 in which you play as various characters, but instead of short linear experiences for each of them, you can choose from them to tackle the open world in different playstyles.

Not gonna lie I think it would be awesome to see a modern take on Resident Evil: Outbreak and have it set in a semi open-world Racoon city. Outbreak was a brilliant concept but came at a time when there wasn't the tech to fully realise it.

That said, Resident Evil 9 should probably be a single player game and a continuation of the story.

Yep. Very deliberately hand crafted and intricate metroidvania should be REs general style. They already hit gold with RE2make and somewhat RE4make level design. Literally just make that, but improve on it. That's all anyone is asking for.

It's baffling. I don't know why these dev's keep thinking that we want bigger worlds, with random chit markers littered over the map with the same tasks to do over and over again. I legit don't know if there's some kind of data/metric where it keeps saying open world games align better with player count/interest but it's absolutely retarded.

Like you said, the reception for RE2make and RE4make should have given them an idea that people prefer denser and more interconnected/intricate zones/maps than just slapping on some retarded massive map that just loses focus

The Evil Within 2 is pretty open world and its better than any RE game except maybe 4. Evil Within games are made by the veteran creator of RE so it makes sense it could turn out awesome too. Im sure most of you never even played Evil Within 2 so its stupid to say they cant make a good open world RE game

Fuk that chit! Why does every damn game needs be an open world now? I wish more linear games would make a comeback. The RE 4 remake was one of the most universally beloved games released in years & no one was crying that they didn't turn it into another Assassin's Creed lite. FFS!

Meanwhile, they don't even make urban or crime-focused games that are focused on open-worlds anymore if they aren't called "GTA" or a cowboy simulator. Even then, those only come out less than once per decade at this point. Those are really the only games that actually benefit a whole lot from an "open-world" beyond maybe superhero games.

This is true, they should just stick with Metroidvania design. Maybe have it all pool into a few bigger chambers that feel more "open worldy," and maybe that's where all the missions culminate or something, IDK. A few boss chambers, a zombie horde chamber, Umbrella research wing, etc.

Resident evil 7 was the best RE game in years and revived it from life support by being a small, intimate, crafted experience similar to the original game.

They then lost a decent chunk of their good will with RE village which started to get too big again and left a lot of people feeling iffy. It wasn't bad but it was a step down from 7.

I don't think Shinji Mikami had much involvement or direction with EW2, but he definitely did with EW1, which I consider to be the superior game. EW2 was a bit "meh" I thought.

I think EW1 was the better survival horror but i think EW2 is just as good for different reasons. Both are great games and Mikami directed RE1 and RE4. These older cats are talented and if they have control i think whatever they touch would be good

Shouldn't they try to un-fukk Dragon's Dogma 2 before ever trying to use the RE2 engine for an open world game again?

Hell, they couldn't even optimize Street Fighter's open world part, and that game looks like piss.

Monster Hunter World is already enough of a pain in the ass to traverse, which is precisely why I modded the sprint speed to make it feel normal, so uh... good luck with that, capcom.

Then there's the general gameplay loop of MH where there aren't really "mobs" as a focus over the real monsters that are like boss fights, so what's the point, even? Chasing down monsters is already not that great, and small monsters are pretty dull fodder worth little at all.

I can sort of see the idea working for an open world city in Resident Evil, but the real challenge becomes making the world itself enjoyable enough to justify an open world formula instead of something that feels like busy work.

Even then, simply because you could do it doesn't mean that it's time to throw all restraint to the wind and make a potentially bloated game that overstays its welcome for no reason than to shove in collectibles, grinding, farming, ect.

With so many open world games, a return to smaller metroidvania styled games would be a breathe of fresh air.

There's nothing quite like find a new area, working your way through, only to discover some puzzle-like twist to how it connects elsewhere or back to where you started as a shortcut.
