Its Because the money has to go into good graphics and not into people who can actually write good games. Its not a big mystery. Its really very simple. Nobody knows how to do it. They are all old and or dying. Just idiots but at least the Asians still make good games.

A big part of it is they forced out all the good old "fratboy" talent in the west and replaced them with woke diversity hires fresh out of colleges who are only competent at doing specific technical jobs they were taught. Replace the passionate with the passionless, and the games will reflect that.

There shouldnt be any reason with these budgets we cant have both. FF7 Rebirth is a damn good game. The graphics arent mindblowing but still pretty good and what most games should hope to achieve by todays standards. Reminds me of an old school JRPG. It can be done but like i said all the good ones are old and dying.

They probably managed to keep some talent onboard. Yeah, I agree that there is no good reason they can't keep the talent around, but sadly politics and ideology seem to often get in the way. Just look at how many people on game dev teams get cancelled for daring to wrongthink on social media.

I cant remember the last time a decent open world came out that actually pushes the genre forward. Every single game follows the ubisoft formula more or less to varying degrees.

I agree, but games like Ghost of Tsushima do it so much better than Ubisoft, or I am hearing Rise of the Ronin is just as bad. I think the difference in a good open-world game and a bad one is pretty significant even if it's the same basic formula followed.

Yeah, I think it's starting to pigeonhole games into certain stylistic choices. Feels like if you're not going for photorealistic you're going to take a hit on reviews which eats into sales which eats into revenue which means studios get shuddered.

BUT

In the last couple of years you've also gotten:
Sea of Stars
Unicorn Overlord
Immortality
Pentiment
HiFi Rush
Helldivers
Hades
Deaths Door
Tunic
Little Nightmares
Planet of Lana
Etc

So there is still creativity to be found, but I think the AAA tentpole releases are struggling because of it.

I don't think gamers are pushing for the most AMAZING GRAFFIX EVAR! All people really want is acceptable image quality, acceptable art direction and acceptable performance for the $70-$100 price tag they're paying.

Elden Ring looked objectively worse than what could be done at the time (Demon's Souls Remake) , but people didn't complain about its graphics. Same goes for Baldur's Gate which looked weaker compared graphically.

People are mad at a few recent games because they either have weak graphics for their AAA price tag (Ronin) or have really trash image quality (Rebirth) or horrific performance issues (Dragon's Dogchit).

All people want is something that meets the bare minimums and you'd see far less complaining.

Apex legends has better graphics than alot of games out there.

You say that about "free twitch shooters" as if fortnite isn't at the bleeding edge of technology with the ue5 engine. They use that game to showcase it and it is more advanced than most of what you're playing.

Agree that graphics can be part of the discussion. I think current day graphics has TAKEN OVER the discussion though.

Basically any new game that comes out, the discussion is resolution/graphics instead of whether the game is actually enjoyable or not

Well yes, that's obvious because in those games you don't want crazy heavy graphics and particle effects that bog down performance. The simpler things are to make out and higher frames you get = a competitive advantage.

That's not how people are gonna view a $70 AAA single player game. The expectations are very different so said game is gonna have to deliver in those different areas from your sweaty shooter.
