Question Video: Why are Boxers so good at doing the jump rope? whats the purpose

A lot of boxers have insane jump rope skills, ive seen them go for minutes on end without missing a step, whats the purpose of this is it coordination? footwork, cardio? How do you get good at it? Ive did jump rope back in high school when I wrestled but just basic to get a sweat going before a match, I can't go for long though most I did was 30 seconds without skipping a bit, some of these boxers can go 10 to 15 minutes non stop without skipping a beat

Style mostly. Notice how those videos are legit photoshoots, marketing for the fighters. It's highly effective as a warm up and a cool down for the upper and lower body. Jump rope, excluding those half-squat maneuvers, is actually very easy when you do it every day. It's relaxing, helps you to focus on breathing, moving the hands and the feet, and most importantly improves your rhythm and balance.

Different fighters have different rhythms. It also really helps with footwork sometimes, making minor adjustments which are efficient. Check out Ali's circling to the inside, and Fury's highly efficient footwork. When your balance improves, your head movement also improves.

Notice how fast and centered Mayweather is when he's jumping. Whereas Tyson is mostly doing squat techniques which are very taxing on the lower body. His style was peekaboo, which relied on his lower body and excellent head movement.

These are elite athletes though. World class boxing professionals. Watching them jump rope is like watching an ultimate ironman go for a walk. It's nothing to them.

Its some of the toughest cardio you can do.

I thought it would be easy like most guys think until i tried it.

30 seconds seems like a lifetime.

it's one of those exercise that has little carry over to actual fighting/boxing, but it's so deeply imbedded in the boxing culture that no one bothers to question its relevancy to the actual sport.

it's like those speedbag exercise. zero carry over to one's ability to fight, but they are present in any boxing gym across the world.

They are there to reinforce rhythm, being light on your feet, and building cardio/shoulder stamina.

It’s just an easy exercise that checks the right boxes of speed/cardio/coordination/rhythm with low barriers when it comes to equipment/space

MMA draws from a pool of high school janitors, pool cleaners, plumbers, uber eats cyclists, and Red Lobster waiters. They could never compete with the cream of the crop of boxing.

No most MMA athletes would tap the fuk out in a vale tudo with no rounds and no stand ups.

It’s a sport designed to highlight explosive and strong people and not have two guys rolling around for 20 minutes.

    this.

don't think 80% here has actually jumped rope LOL

it actually uses a bit of shoulders when you're moving it fast and it's all about muscle endurance. being light on your feet and always on your toes, calves and foot muscles are activated as fuk

Same here, I never got good at it, I never could do tricks we used to skip rope for wrestling but only to warm up just basic rope stuff for a few minutes but seeing guys like Floyd Mayweather skipping rope with the eyes closes and doing criss cross moves is insane, I think it helps with timing and gives you stronger senses?

You basically answered your own question. It's great for their coordination and cardio. Helps tremendously with their footwork.

I jump and do tricks on this level. It's a fun way to get cardio in and an art form.

SkippingRope and Dance can be indicative of Athletic Fighting Potential. It's why DANCE has been a core element of training among primal warrior cultures from the Old World Warriors of the Steppe(Mongols/Cossacks) to the New World Native Americans
yeah when I look at them skipping rope they have like a super human quality its like effortless and has to do with a mind body connection, timing is key in boxing and it seems this helps their timing big time. Ive tried skipping rope many times and all I can do is basic rope jumps, so I gave up, my friend back in high school on the wrestling team could skip effortlessly barely lifting his feet when we cut weight he would skip with the sauna suit on and for 30 minutes. I opted just to go jogging to get a sweat going, Id only skip rope before matches for like 5 minutes to get loose.

The way they jump just high enough to barely clear the rope is so much harder than they make it look. And that's just the most basic, the tricks they thrown in, skipping while moving forward, backwards, side to side, would take an insane amount of practice. I tried once and gave up right away when I realized how many hours you'd have to dedicate to it.

toughest cardio? cmon man. it's a good form of cardio but to label it as gruelling just means you're out of shape or dont know how to jump rope. once you get good at it all you need is a tiny jump

Also Caleb Plant dude can skip for long sessions without messing up

I think the best boxer rope guy is Brian Viloria dude does insane moves and doesnt messs up I posted it in the first video you have to click the link to watch on youtube they dont allow embeds

Yup, them barely lifting their feet for the rope just to go under and not mess up and do moves is insane, when I skip I have to lift my feet up high lol

I could never do that stuff, its insane I always wonder how they get so good at the rope? I tried when I was a kid and when I wrestled in high school, could just do the basic jump and get tired never could just barely lift my foot or do the walk step skipping that they do. it reminds me of people who can play guitar so effortlessly

This. I think some people believe it can help with agility and footwork, but that's a massive stretch imo.

No, it doesn't. You absolutely no nothing about boxing and spewing low IQ first week in the gym generic ChatGPT boxing talking points.

You don't even fkn know the difference between movement and footwork.

Jump rope has nothing to do with improving your boxing footwork. High level boxing footwork is subtle little steps, little adjustments, tiny pivots, angles, and being in balance and position to always throw punches.

You are confusing MOVEMENT with FOOTWORK. They are not the same. You don't know chit about boxing. Jumping rope helps with movement, not footwork.

An example of someone with godlike movement but absolute dogchit footwork is Manny Pacquaio. People confuse his ability to float around the ring effortlessly for footwork when it's the farthest thing from it. Pacquaio's footwork has always been ugly as fukk, which is why he always throws off balanced and is falling all over the place. His trash footwork was why he struggled so much vs Marquez, the complete opposite of him. Marquez has masterful footwork, but is relatively slow on his feet. His tiny little half step back every time Pac would lunge in is the reason why he's a stylistic nightmare for Pacquaio, and one of the reason why Pac ran face first into that counter right hand that put him out cold.

Boxing noobs confuse that non stop wasteful bouncy movement with footwork. It's the same reason MMA retards think someone like Dominic Cruz has "footwork" when really he just has erratic and retarded movement that works in MMA because those "strikers' are absolute bum. The moment Cruz ran into someone with decent boxing (Garbrandt) he got absolute embarrassed by basic boxing.

Most people don't know chit about boxing.

yea you've never trained. there's a reason all top boxers jump rope and it's not because of cardio hence why other martial arts dont put so much empthesis on it
