Hard for me to see PS releasing a device that doesn't run games from current gen, even if they have to run at 30fps 720p. Doesn't make business sense to split their library when the industry is going in a direction of play everything on every device. Then again, this company released a VR headset without backwards compatibility and almost no games.A new PlayStation handheld powered by AMD is in early development, and it will apparently be compatible with both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles.
As reported by Moore's Law is Dead in a new YouTube video, the Japanese company is apparently planning to re-enter the handheld market with new hardware. The console will be powered by a custom AMD APU and is currently in the High Level Design Phase, meaning that it is at least two years away and hasn't been greenlit for release yet.
The specs for this new PlayStation handheld have yet to be defined, but Moore's Law is Dead speculates it's likely to utilize 18 CUs to maintain compatibility with all PlayStation 4 titles available on the PlayStation Store. In addition, the console will be compatible with PlayStation 5 titles as well, although developers would have to patch them to make them run properly on the console. As such, it's plausible the new system's GPU could run at 1.8 GHz or slower due to the PlayStation 5's variable clock speeds.
While the new PlayStation handheld could be just two years away, there's the chance it will take more time to see its release if it is greenlit, as it has been suggested to Moore's Law is Dead that the console will be part of the PlayStation 6 family, releasing as a handheld alternative meant for the Japanese market.

sony also made that "mobile" device thing that can only play your ps5 on wifi at your house, which is nearly useless.
they made some dumb decisions so we'll see how bad they fuk this one up🌺 Lauren Brooks Kelly (snailsrus) - Jul 25, 1991 – Jan 29, 2022

If this trash is true then that means lower quality Sony games for us in order to get them to work on the poverty system. It's like a series S situation, but worse.

No one uses the things though.
I don't think this will make that big of an impact. Games today aren't made for specific hardware and can scale. It's how the same game will run on a monster 85 TF 14900k/4090 system and is also playable on a 1.5 TF Steam Deck.
However this will likely just be a Steam Deck with a proprietary Sony interface. All of these systems are using AMD APUs.RIP snails

Playstation games are optimized for Playstation hardware and that's why they look and perform as well as they do. Having to gimp your game for a very weak piece of hardware means it can't be pushed to the best fidelity as well as CPU usage on your main platform.
Additional to that, working on just one system means less work, less time and less money. In 3 years we will have a PS5, PS5 Pro, PS6 around the corner and a handheld? That's 4 systems to support and right now Sony can't even make enough games for just the PS5 alone lmao▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

If they opened up the library to this thing, PS1-3, possibly even PS4, PSP/Vita... I don't know.
Vita was my favorite handheld ever for a time, killed by Sony's greed, but I would give whatever they have a chance, provided it's not the Portal or some chit that doesn't run anything natively.
Hear me out. The Steam Deck is in the same neighborhood as the PS4 (what, 1.6 teraflops to 4.something?).
Put out something that can run PS4 games handheld, which might extend the life of that console or justify games still being made on it. I haven't ****ed w/ PS4 in years, I even own two collecting dust somewhere, but playing games handheld might make me go back. Meanwhile, even if it's 1/3 the power of the PS4 like the SteamDeck, you'd run those games more than fine on a small screen.
On the other hand, what's it going to do that the Steam Deck isn't? If it's just play PS4 games, how much of that is already around on Steam? All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

I'd take this rumor with a grain of salt. If true why did Sony even bother with the portal? With internet getting better and better, portal is the better choice for them in the long run rather than releasing a dedicated handheld that would require additional support and resources (something they have a horrible track record with) and it will have to compete with Switch 2 and Steam Deck 2? Awfukbye lmao good luck with that.

*recently
Initial sales were high demand supposedly. That's the thing about Sony's bullchit, they have a loyal fanbase that will gladly rush out and buy them up first thing, but that doesn't always develop into sustained long term sales. That and Sony has become notorious for their hardware shortages of new released Playstation products.

First part hasn't been true since the PS3 era. Especially now that all studios now are developing the PC versions of games side by side. Literally all you have to do is lower assets and settings to make a console version of a game. This is due to the increased costs of game development, and was the major factor in the PS4 adopting PC architecture.
Second part was answered by the first.RIP snails

There's a reason Sony first party games look, perform and are optimized extremely well at launch. It's because they make the game to push one specific set of hardware. To fragment that development across multiple pieces of hardware will only reduce the overall quality of the game and introduce additional time to develop as well as additional associated costs.
If a dev had to make a game and the options were as follows:
1. Make game that only runs on a specific $5k 4090 beast PC and go as ham as you want
2. Make a game for the above PC but it must also be fully playable on Nintendo Switch
You're saying the game would look and play identically in both options? Come on brah even you're not that dumb.▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

First VR, then wifi handheld, now game console handheld. Why doesn't PlayStation just make games lol? Knowing their stupid fan base, they'll make a killing selling a handheld for the first few years until their fanbase realize how fking useless and retarded it is.
It really would be a bad move by Sony. Why make a handheld when you have so many other windows handhelds out there where you could simply just release your titles on? Now you're gonna make a handheld that will either sell for less & lose money or sell for an outrageous price which normal people wouldn't buy. What a bunch of morons.Last edited by taskmob; 03-22-2024 at 02:38 PM.

I think you missed what I said. Games aren't built to hardware. The devs make a game, and then scale it to what runs. In terms of consoles they may have to downgrade it so it will run at acceptable levels. There isn't a 'secret sauce' to the consoles anymore. The PS5 is an AMD zen2/rdna2 combo running Sony's flavor of free bsd with a slower 8 core zen 2 with cut down floating point units and a 10ish tflop rdna2 gpu similar to a 6700 (slower but higher bandwidth).

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-spec...on-5-gpu.c3480
There isn't building a game for the hardware on these consoles (there is on switch because it's proprietary), it's just how can we get this game running how we want on this particular hardware.RIP snails

Didnt read past this point. That's not how it works, devs definitely have to keep in mind their hardware limitations (consoles in this case) and it's not uncommon for entire systems/features to be scrapped because they couldn't get it done on the weakest console. This is exactly why Horizon Burning Shores couldn't be released for the PS4 as it contained a certain section which was impossible for the console to handle, as stated by the devs themselves. At that point the PS4 base was by far the larger install and they lost out a ton of sales by making it PS5 only.
The same happened for BG3 which Larian couldn't get to work on the Series S for months so they had to delay on Xbox totally. This is a completely retarded take from you, and if you don't get it yet I'm wasting my time trying to explain further.▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

CPU limitations are definitely real, and if the hardware doesn't meet the minimum spec then it won't work.
A sony handheld running on the same gen (or better) from the base console should be fine. Especially considering how CPU constrained things are already (like BG3) on consoles.
What hurt series S was microsoft required feature parity. Split screen coop isn't happening on a handheld.RIP snails
