Rochester schools shut down Wednesday and residents were warned to boil their water after a body was found in the city’s reservoir.

Workers with the city’s Bureau of Water discovered the adult man around 8 a.m. Tuesday during their morning checks of the Highland Park Reservoir, officials said.

The reservoir was immediately disconnected from the public water supply and a plan was launched to drain the 26 million-gallon body of water.

This is a very very sad situation. But it compounds in that being that this happened near our water supply. It’s important that we exercise this abundance of caution in terms of this boil water advisory,” Mayor Malik Evans said.

The body was recovered by a police SCUBA team and has been turned over to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.

Officials have only described the individual as an “adult male.”

Police are combing through security footage to uncover how the man wound up in the reservoir, and potentially find out how he died.

It is not clear how long the body had been in the water, but Rochester officials emphasized that the reservoir “is inspected daily, and water quality is monitored continuously.”

This. I used to go fishing up at the Papacton Reservoir all the time. The pump houses have armed guards 24/7. Part of the aqueduct system feeding down to NYC (think Die Hard With a Vengeance).

While the video was not shared with the press, city officials described the man as acting erratically around the edge of the water after climbing the fence on the morning of Feb. 24, a Saturday. The man then slipped and fell into the water.

There is no suspected foul play, and the death is believed to be unintentional. Mayor Malik Evans said the man was 29-year-old Abduhahi Muya. Abduhahi, a refugee from ****lia who suffered from mental health issues. He was last seen by his family on Feb. 18 on Van Aucker Street, about two miles from the reservoir.

“I’m very concerned that someone was able to breach that water system,” Mayor Malik Evans said, while adding that he has no concerns about water quality. “Nobody should be able to get into a reservoir. Those stakes are incredibly high. There are cameras everywhere. That is something we need to get to the bottom of, is how someone was able to breach that?”

The body was discovered this week by maintenance workers during a routine check of the water. Why the body was not noticed for 24 days, nor the surveillance footage reviewed, remains unclear.
