lol went back and watch full games. I’ll be honest Jordan played against a bunch of Plumbers and electricians srs. Most these players wouldn’t even be in the league in 2023 lmao. I was the biggest Jordan fan and I hate Lebron. But I don’t have a rebuttal for this lmao

what?
90s players still made millions a year. they were not "plumbers and electricians" like the 1960/70s NBA. by the early 90s players adjusted for inflation still earned a little less than current 2023 players, but they were well paid, made millions and compared nicely to other sports.
jordan is still the highest paid player ever in the nba adjusted for inflation. he was making like 34mm a year in the 90s which is about 60mil plus today.

The average players were worse because not every black kid grew up being told it was NBA, rap, or bust in life at the time like they are now.
The elite guys of the 80's and 90's would still be elites today, though. They played against each other enough to show that. Jordan still stood out in a career that spanned him playing high level Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Shaq, etc.

The elites will always be elite
Old man wilt dominated young Kareem
Old Kareem dominated young Hakeem
Old Hakeem dominated young Shaq
But nostalgia plays a lot into people saying the game was better even in the 00s. 90s you were able to pack the lane cus nobody could shoot 3s off the dribble, you still had enforcers like Charles Oakley getting major minutes and guy couldn't hit a running layup. As much flack as nba gets today, even your bigs and defensive specialist have to be able to dribble and shoot.

“And if you, having a dog's mouth, want to bark for fun—that's your custom as a serf: it is an honor to you, but it is disgrace for us to think of you, let alone to snarl back at you, and there is naught worse in this world than to bark along with you, and if you want to bark, find yourself a serf like you, and bark with him."

It's like this with all games and sports. Go look at early 2000s counter-strike pros. Or look at how chess players have gotten better over time. Look at how tennis has improved. Over time, the collective improves at the game. In the 90's, people literally didn't understand how irrational strategically going for 2s was over 3 pointers. Now, people either go in close or go for 3s. It took some statistical analysis for people to realize they were playing basketball wrong.

A low rate diversity hire, a pathetic father and ex husband to a current lesbian.

There’s truth to this.
In the 80s and 90s you couldn’t zone. You had to either play one on one, or fully commit to double or triple team. If you cheated and played the passing lane, you’d get hit with an illegal defense call.
MJ benefited greatly from taking dudes one on one. Shaq became the most dominant basketball force ever around 1999-2000. In an effort to slow him down, the league allowed zone defense. This would allow, in theory, a big to play Shaq straight up, and others could linger near or around the paint and be in great position to steal an entry pass, or immediately smother him.
Shaq was too powerful, and too smart so he either quickly made a move and dragged whoever tried to hang onto him with him, or kicked it out to one of the Lakers great shooters. What this rule did do was make defense harder than ever before. There are quotes from Tim Duncan, TMac, and other legends stating that this rule change was the single most effective defensive rule that messed with them.
Sure in the 80s you could push hips, and the Pistons took it so far the league had to crate flagrant fouls. That’s not good defense. If Curry were in front of me, and I kicked him in the balls and then stepped on his head as he fell over I could stop him, but does that make me a great defender?
JimmyXHighRoller had a great video on this, but he’s made it private for some reason.Lurking since '05 - the days of VS gorilla/cloud/goku threads

JFL.
If you literally breathe on players these days they call it a foul.
One of the most unwatchable eras of basketball was Harden's time in Houston where every single time he would drive and cock his head back it was a foul.
Every one of these clowns are bitching for a call after a single finger grazes their arm.

They specifically recruit more 3 pt specialists now. It is waaay more important than it was. They also train 3s more. The game has transformed at all levels because people realized how going for 3s is more optimal. If you look at the heatmaps for modern players, people almost exclusively go for close shots or 3s. Back in the day, people were all over the place. Nobody had optimized it.
