Yeah it appears to be, never finished the 80s series but it's the same premise from what I can tell.

Was intrigued by the commercials so I read the book before it came out. Never saw the 80s mini series. I really enjoyed the book and I’d say the show is pretty good too so far. Taking it pretty serious, changing the tone slightly works for the show /modern times.

What I like doing when I am watching this stuff is looking up what all else is going on in the world during the time period it is set in. Like what was going on in England, the Americas, Italy, etc... just to see how far behind or ahead the Japanese are compared to the rest of the world. Like when did Christianity get to Japan, what was the primary religion in Japan during this time, did Japan have firearms etc... Excellent show, that dude getting his head chopped off at the beginning just for going up to that guy was wild.
