    Bulk to cut transition

Been bulking about 4 months and looking to start a cut soon. Is a maintenance period necessary? Or is there any harm in going straight from bulk calories/macros to cut calories/macros?

it's fine, i've only heard that if you go from cut to bulk, you should do a brief maintenance period to stabilize or something. i like to milk maintenance gains before bulking though...

You need to steadily decrease calories and not just nose dive your calories. Most guys really have a hardtime dialing in maintenance calories. After a bulk, I would try to find what my new caloric needs actually are before cutting so I can do it in a logical way. The online calculators are a good place to start but I find they are sometimes off.

I'm guilty of that sh*t too, waiting for somebody to powder my nuts cuz I did 20 reps of whatever the **** on the bench. Big f*king deal. It is all relative." G Diesel

Jumping straight from a bulk to a cut can be a bit shocking to your system, so easing into it with a maintenance period can be beneficial. This allows your body to adjust to a new, lower calorie intake gradually, which can help preserve muscle mass while you start to lose fat. There's no harm in switching directly, but a maintenance phase might make the transition smoother and more manageable, both mentally and physically. It also gives you a chance to find the right balance of calories and macros that works for cutting, without feeling too drastic.
