My GotY "Unicorn Overlord" Mar 8th (Switch, PS4&5) Free Demo out now

This isn't for anyone else, not as much as for me, but I bet some of you sleeping on this or who think the name sucks chit (and you're not wrong) may enjoy. Anyone familiar with Ogre Battle (part of the Tactics Ogre universe) will recognize the gameplay. To the 99.8% of you who are not familiar with Ogre Battle, it's like real time Fire Emblem with units of several characters instead of single characters.

I'm playing the demo, damn thing derailed my run of Persona 3R, but it's a free 5+ hour demo available on Switch and PS4 and PS5. I recommend to try the demo to anyone remotely interested in Fire Emblem style games or anyone who likes to fiddle around endlessly with armies.

I'd sold my Switch OLED to my kid, got a new one just for this game. So far, not regretting that at all. Demo alone is kicking ass.

It is an auto battler, but only in the same sense that Fire Emblem is as well. This is just more complicated setup that instead of single units trading a couple blows, you have an entire squad you can assign orders to dictate how/what they do.

The tactical part of it is the setup, what goes on before the battle, with how you build a squad and what orders you assign them to follow.

To each their own, though, repped for trying it out. Not every game is for everyone and this one is far more niche than a lot, but for the people who will enjoy it, I think they'll enjoy it a lot. So far with the demo, it is great at doing what it does

I did only play up until the part where you kill the mage boss with the towers, I might give it another go. Reviews drop tomorrow. Its gonna score well I think at least mid 80s

I like the look of it, but it feels like they added TOO much. Not sure how I feel about the real time and the stamina nonsense. It would be very annoying to get into a battle and lose a stronghold because the battle animation is long.

Will try it on the Switch tho, seems like a good Switch game.

I don't think the timer kicks down during combat animations (although the demo timer does). The endurance of the units is to encourage you to use more than one OP squad.

IGN review, and I dislike IGN and it's reviews, but they gave it 9/10 and while it's obvious the guy who is narrating did not even play it and is reading a script, otherwise it's a good review...



Game runs fine on Switch, it's not demanding in the least.

I haven’t failed any battles yet but I’m only on the tactical difficulty rather than expert

It’s finally getting a bit tougher I did the starting area and dragon area and now I’m in the elf area

Part of me would have preferred a better system for expanding your units. I'm guessing that by hour 20 it doesn't matter and you're flush with Honor, but I mean in the early goings it is sloowww going.

Honor didn't become meaningless for me until the very end, when I was in the Holy Angel land, whateveritscalled.

Honor is used to get squads from 2 to 3 members, later from 3 to 4 and then at the end from 4 to 5. It's also used to promote units, which for me is when it really began to be in short supply for awhile. At the end of the game it can be used to infinitely purchase those mirrors that allow you to respec and recolor your units.

It's almost necessary. You work with a couple guys who are low level (all but one having a single AP and PP point). You get used to the tactics, then you grow and the units get more and more AP/PP, at some point it's overwhelming to see how chit unfolds during combats - for me, in a good way.

Then by the mid game, you get a new unit and you spend 30m fuking around in mock battles, working on new team tactics.

OB is a contender for GOAT, don't get me wrong, but it had a lot less going on w/ it's tactics. This has engineering level complexity that you can play around with, which would overwhelm anyone if they just handed that to you at the start.

Yeah. Feels like that might be the problem though. They've introduced all these tactics but at what cost? Just me though, I think you're into the tinkering and I feel like it's a drain to constantly tinker. I can't even figure out what's good. They say to put Clerics with Gladiators but all that accomplishes is less damage output because the Gladiators do a good job of healing themselves with Bulk Up.

And then it honestly feels kind of useless to hire mercenaries. I don't think that should be an option til later in the game because virtually every battle comes with a new character for your army.

I can't decide if I should pair Lex/Claire together or Travis/Bruno or if I should strictly min/max damage output as its tough to tell what's better for the story.

You get rewards for executing many of them and other than a handful of unique classes, generic mercs are no worse (often better). Just kill 'em. Really, generic mercs are probably better, you get to set their specific growth path, so no Hoplites with "Offensive" being wasted like old Hodrick.

Some of the villains are written to die, so you get that. Overall, it's a lot of recruiting morally grey people.

I hear you. You get to the point where your squads are 4-5 people and you've got 8 or more of them. You get a new guy and, if you're like me, you can spend an hour fuking around trying to slot them in a group and them optimize the new team synergy/strategy.

BM, by Batorias (or whatever the were-Canada place was) I just said fuk and kept it to 7 squads of more 'elite' guys rather than messing with 8 or all 10 squad slots. I benched a lot of units and didn't look back. Some of those elves were killing me, I had a hard time finding places for them where they did anything (other than the two sisters, who were very awesome; plus easy on the eyes).
