Do you play MMOs? If not what made you stop playing them?

I feel like ever since playing RuneScape as a kid and being addicted to that game, I'm always looking for games that have MMO/online aspects, and if I don't see numbers going up in a game I feel like my time is being wasted.

This is likely why I can't enjoy those single player story games, I just feel like I'm not progressing on something.

Even something as simple as cod, if I didn't see xp bars going up each game, ranks going up, gun levelling etc it doesn't hold my attention.

I'm always on the hunt for an MMO to relive the RuneScape days for me, I did play some old school RuneScape but have since dropped off that for many years.

Maybe new world might be the game I'm looking for

MMOs typically are only enjoyable for me when I have tons and tons of free time, which is probably the worst time to be getting sucked into an MMO. WOW in my late teens was one of those periods. And Albion Online during peak covid

Keep an eye on Ashes of Creation but release probably won;t be till 2025

    Nah not my thing

I remember back in 2003-4 being a highly competitive cod 1 player. If you were a PC gamer playing in different online communities, you might remember the great culling that was the world of 2004 world of warcraft release. Lost alot of good homies to wow addictions back then.

Just got back into Destiny 2 this past week with the Humble Bundle $20 dlc bundle. Open world loot shooters like D2 and The Division 2 are the only MMOs I can really get into nowadays.

PHUK That. I feel like I wasted a lot of time when I was younger playing MMO's/MMORPG's. There is like a never ending sort of investment of playing those kinds of games. Pouring so many hours getting gear doing all these various things. I used to be so addicted to that genre type of games. Anything from Maplestory, Runescape,DCUO,Flyff,Gunz Online(a few other Asian games and North American),Swtor,City of Heroes,Club Penguin,ToonTown Online phuk I've played so many I can't even remember the names played at least 20-30 when I was kid. Most shut down by now. But yeah it's very very addictive. I guess if you have self-discipline it's not that bad. But would rather stick to just single-player games.

Off topic. knew this guy in high school who pretty much lived and breathed WoW. Don't think he ever graduated and he was constantly getting fat and neglecting his health. Not sure if he's even alive. Obviously thats an extreme case and I know not everyone goes to the extreme with it but yeah.

Last one I played was Final Fantasy 14 Online and it's still a favorite of mine. Pretty chill community.

All of the other MMORPG's I've played in the past have died or their private servers have small groups of active people. Star Wars Galaxies and City of Heroes

    Play MMOs for content only.

Wow came out my freshman year of college right when I got kicked out for selling drugs.

I went to cooking school in a big city but couldn’t go out to bars with other guys, 80% of my class was over 21 and I just went straight into working ****ed up hours in kitchens.

So I had over 1 year /played in WoW on 1 character by the third expansion.

I eventually found out being a HWL doesn’t get you pussy so I stopped all electronic games / no computer / no tv right when I turned 21 and got a girlfriend who I’m now married too.

After dating a few years I eventually got a computer again and Dabbled in LoL but when kids came I closed up computer gaming forever and will only spend some time in bed at end of day playing whatever console game a few days a week.

Never been a fan of MMO's. I tried getting into WOW way back when it was in it's prime, never could, and I always hated the concept of paying a monthly fee just to play a single video game. I think the KOTOR MMO was the last time I tried to get into one, and that was sort of bust. Played Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 briefly, couldn't be bothered to get into them either. With those it's like I would much rather just go back and play one of the solo games they made.

I think MMO has always appealed mostly to a particular type of person, who plays one all the time as their primary go-to game.

They aren't any more fun to play than single player open world games for me. I mean its fun to play with friends, but after 3 or 4 months the mystique wears off.

You reach max level. Explore all the dungeons. Then what's left? Running the same chit over and over for a 1% drop or farming hundreds of hours for some crafting crap?

    No thx Jeff.

When I was proper neetmaxxing I maxed on runescape which was like over a year of solid playing, more than 8 hours a day.

I also got into clue scrolls and got 6 or 7 dyes, which are like mega valuable.

It got to the point where honestly I had so much in game money I could buy almost anything I wanted and the only real goal left would have been to try grind money for a party hat or something.

Maxing in runescape is a funny thing because you get obsessed with it but when you finally achieve it after like 1000 hours or something of grinding nobody gives a **** and you realize it was a pointless waste of time.

I don't regret it though tbh, I actually enjoyed the grind and have a lot of memories from that time, I'd never do it again though it's just so unproductive.

I played RuneScape, WoW, and EverQuest 2 in the mid to late 2000s, partly with IRL friends and partly solo.

I think EverQuest 2 was underrated. I had a lot of fun with that one. It was just unlucky enough to be released at the same time as WoW.

I also played Elder Scrolls Online in 2014, but my IRL friends that I was playing with quit, and I didn't have enough interest to keep playing solo.

I had fun with these games, but I stopped playing them because I just can't justify the time commitment anymore.

I never played Runescape, just couldn't get into it. It was the same era of Runescape though, I played a game called Global Mu Online, I think I started in 2004. It was fun for its time, but in retrospect it was super grindy. Such good times though, it was the first multiplayer PC game I played with my friends.

Most of my friends switched to WoW at some point. WoW looked great but I was a HS kid and couldn't afford the subscription every month and my parents wouldn't pay it. I don't blame them; I would like to play WoW now but I refuse to pay a monthly subscription just to play one game.

In the 2010s I played both Guild Wars 2 and DC Universe Online. Got tired of Guild Wars 2 after a while. I would be playing DCUO now if I had anyone to play with. The only friend who wants to play doesn't have a PC so he would want to play on Xbox. I don't want to play an MMO on console, and further I own some DLC on the PC version. And for some reason there is crossplay between PC and Playstation but not between PC and Xbox.

Aside from that, there's not really any good MMOs out that I'm interested in other than WoW but I'm not paying a subscription for that.

I still play Runescape a bit, maybe 1-2 hours per week, it's easy to just go in and dick around a bit then log off, played it since I was 10 or something.

I played Sea of Thieves for a month. It was enjoyable enough but got a little too repetitive towards the end. I doubt I'll ever really get into an MMO again.

Wayyyyy back in 2004 I played City of Heroes a lot. Enjoyed it but not enough to keep playing as my backlog of other titles started to rise. I tried to enjoy Guild Wars in 2005 and just couldn't after about 6 hours of trying.

Unfortunately I know a few people who stunted their careers and social life during young adulthood due to Everquest & WoW. There were people in my dorm that straight up were logged into Everquest 24/7, so even when they slept it would still be running.

I played Aion for 12 years, only recently quit it again.

MMO's always will probably be my favourite genre but they are so hard to make there just isnt any ones worth playing right now imo

I wish they would make a DCUO Part 2 or a sequel game

A lot of it is linked to our childhoods. So you either get MMORPGs or you don't.

I've played RuneScape since I was 10, I am now 29 and I've probably not gone longer than 2 years without playing it. I always find myself coming back to OSRS in cycles. I'll play for 3 months and then stop for 6 and then return etc. It's a vicious cycle.

RS has always been a comfort blanket for me so I think it's linked to stages of my life, when chit gets tough or hard..I go back to OSRS for solace.

I think you'll find it hard to get into another MMORPG at this point and should give OSRS another go
I appreciate well thought out subtle trolling.

    - Vanilla - TBC - WotLK WoW in college, then stopped after graduating and life happened, later on 3-4 months for the following:
    - Legion launch after a schitty break up
    - Shadowlands during the coof lockdown
    - Dragonflight last year after moving back to home country and getting the coof

couldn't pay me to return again

I also played Elder Scrolls Online in 2014, but my IRL friends that I was playing with quit, and I didn't have enough interest to keep playing solo.

I had fun with these games, but I stopped playing them because I just can't justify the time commitment anymore.
I mean I would play OG everquest before 2 any day of the week.

But what’s the point of EverQuest unless you no life it.

Although I did go back and bot a couple epic quests for old times sake like 7 years ago. Was actually fun stomping dungeons with the multi box setup that used to require raids.

Some of my IRL friends played the original EverQuest. They wanted me to play it, but I just couldn't get into it because I played WoW and EQ2 first, and I really missed the quality of life improvements in those games. My friends had been playing since before those games.

I have massive respect for EQ1 though because I know how popular it is/was.

Same. I'm not a huge graphics guy but the graphics on the original are noticeably dated at this point. Aside from that just some QOL updates to game mechanics and a couple new powers and they'd be good. There are still plenty of comics stories they can draw from.

Yeah I guess it’s mostly nostalgia. I started playing around release in 99 on 56k dialup lmao. But there will never be another online game that has a server/community like what developed, which they can’t ever recreate.

The scale of everything, the constant fights multi raids pulling over each other cuz no instances etc.. fighting raid bosses with garbage from bank cuz you need to get to corpses and had respawns.

    Wild wild west
