So I need a french drain installed on one side of my house. Had a couple contractors come out essentially they need to dig a 60' trench and lay 60' of sloped perforated PVC pipe. Labor would be $2090 (no problem) and materials would be $700 (fkn lol). Told him he has a deal if I can supply my own materials and pay the $2090 for labor. He tells me that works and gives me an estimate reflecting this.
A couple days later, I call him with my credit card ready to go. He tells me his boss told him I can't supply the materials and they'll only do it if they supply the materials. Maximum bait and switch.
Do you know how much 60' of perforated PVC pipe costs? It costs $54 max at full retail price. They would like to charge me $700 for supplying $54 of pipe. That is a 1,300% mark up. This company literally went back on what they told me just so they can charge me 1,300% on materials. Fkn lol.
Just wrote this idiot an email telling him I don't want his pipe and to fist himself lol. Unbelievable.

Didn’t read but yeah they will lie right to your face about everything and exploit your ignorance. It is best to whip your dick out right at the beginning so they know not to mess with you.
It took one experience for me.
After that, there is no bull****ting or talking about the car I don’t care. Get your ass to work, don’t lie to me again, if you ****ed up the quote that bad it is on you, I do not care.I only read thread titles and my own posts.

they dont want to deal with some phaggy homeowner buying the wrong chit or the cheapest quality chit. Much easier to buy it themselves. Same reason auto mechanics wont let you buy your own parts because they cant guarantee the work.

Just go to HomoDepot and ask some fine sweaty people on siesta to come help you dig...
Plop the pipe in yourself.
Hope SiestaMen haven't La Migra'd and pay them to fill the hole back in.
Or just rent a small backhoe or some form of trencher, I'm sure a hardware store can rent something small

Thats how we do it, but we also actively avoid homeowner part and parcel BS. From the contractor side middle class homeowners are cheapskates. No, you don't get a special price because you're a homeowner. You pay the same as a commercial project, and honestly, I should charge more because of how much you will most likely nitpick.
Ultimately, they usually just do the work themselves once they get sticker shock, and then try to brag like they did a good job. It always looks like absolute dog chit.*Updated* If you can't hit a 320 yard drive, are you even a man?

Lmao at guys in here acting like it's unheard of to supply a plumber with parts/materials you paid for yourself. The PVC, copper pipes, and pipe fittings you buy at Home Depot are the exact same chit they use. It's not complicated stuff. They aren't getting special, extra high quality materials for it. I've always supplied them with parts I supply myself. They just won't do it if the parts aren't sufficient.

A lot more than just some PVC pipe goes into the ground for a French Drain bud....and I'm sure the contractor is going to do it the right way. Ask him for a bid breakdown with materials lined out......shouldn't be a problem for him to provide.
You should expect some mark-up on the material.....you should also expect to pay an extra cost for them to send someone to go buy the material.....that persons time, gas, tax, blah blah.
I put 150' of FD in my backyard about a year ago......bought all material (like $900) rented a mini-x for 2 days, got a buddy to come over to help.....took about 12 hours total and cost me like $1500.

Not taking Opies or the contractors side based on half of the story....
however...
A business refusing to do the work with customer supplied parts or material is not a new concept. Main reason being is if the company installs parts they bought from one of there suppliers / Vendors is defective then they can get the cost of having to replace or repair it again covered. Not to mention how dumb and $hitty people are these days trying to ruin somebodies livelihood via social media if they throw a fit and dont get their way.
Buys defective pipe or fittings.... $hit leaks and causes major damage... 3.7 seconds later homo-ner hits ever social media platform with
"do NOT use *insert company here* , they overcharge and do $hit work"
What really cracks me up about reading this kind of stuff is its generally people who simply CANT do the job themselves because they are limp wristed dullards with a MBA in Lesbian Basket Weaving with a minor in Suggestive Dance Theory...
End of the day you really are down to 2 or three options
STFU and do it yourself....
STFU and pay somebody to do it....
or...
Just STFU and deal with it as is...6'2" @ 247lbs

Yea man....I'm not disagreeing that the materials are relatively cheap and that OP is getting run on by the contractor......just saying it's not as simple as dropping that $50 worth of pipe in the ground.
Work looks good! I put in about 150' of drain in my backyard about a year ago......completely changed my backyard and made it usable again. Materials was like $900 but I bought the pipe that's already wrapped in aggregate & fabric....was like $60/stick (got that buy 10 or more bulk discount) and I had some 57stone laying around from a previous project that I put around it in some of the softer areas.
Final Backyard Form........

You must not deal with contractors or landscapers much. My dad had the same issue when he hired some contractors to build an extension to a shed he has in his backyard. Its hard to debate the cost of labor, but the parts were marked up an insane amount. He wound up paying about $10k for a job that could have been done for $3-$5k.
Now, every time he wants work done he hires illegals outside of Home Depot. Not only do they finish it faster but he just pays them $1000 (regardless of the size of the job) and pays for their lunch everyday they're working, and they not only get the work done faster, but the quality of work is top notch. He actually became friends with them and they invited him to his daughters quinceañera.
