An Old Bass Turds Boating Thread

I think we need a boating thread.

Any of you old buggers still head out on the water or have memories, pics or videos to share?

I have always been an avid boater mostly for hunting, fishing, water sports and camping. Owned and used everything from a 10 foot jon boat to houseboats. Being raised on the ocean a major portion of our food came from it. We fished everything as it came in season so I was in a boat as far back as I can remember and always had a love of the water.

These days and for the past few decades a canoe, pack raft and now kayaks have been more my passion. I can get in areas where most people don’t go and the fishing is great. I still have 3 boats that I seldom use, opting for the solitude of the back country lakes.


Anything boats belongs in this thread, size doesn’t matter either. Some of my best memories came out of a 12 foot aluminium with a 2 horse Johnson that I used to throw on my ATV trailer and head in the bush.

I always wanted to live near the water, particularly the ocean, so it is ironic that fate has led me to the geographic spot that is one of the furthest spots possible away from any ocean.

No pics or anything, but I used to love waterskiing in my later teen years. Nothing like being on water skis early in the morning when the lake is like glass. Used to also love river rafting. I got pretty good at navigating rapids despite a few instances of nearly dumping everyone in the water.

Haven't been on a boat in awhile, but I do miss it. Interesting thread Pockets.

Never had the chance to get into any of that, but wish to try kayaking some time. Saved some youtube vids of "portable" ones etc. Seems like such a great way to get out with the camera as well.

I paid $20 for this non working 25 horse electric start Evinrude motor on CraigsList. It had no compression. Spent another $25 for a new head gasket and impellor and installed them. Got it running on a sawhorse with a water drum underneath. 6 months later I found that boat on CraigsList to put it on.

Well done Paul, that's great, love hearing stories like this. I was always looking for a deal that I could fix up and dragged a few home over the years.

Watersports are the best Karl, White water rafting is pretty cool although I only did it a couple of times, I was only responsible for holding my ass inside the raft not involved in any of the operation lol.

I had the engine with the bottom half in a drum of water. It wouldn't start. Pulled the spark plugs and they were both wet with water. It didn't take a genius to figure out the head gasket was bad.

We went to Ocean City one year, a bunch of us met up I was like 15-16.

We went to Jolly Rogers and they had these little speed boats, we were all stoned. They don’t even give you a lesson.

Anyway before are turn a poor girl flipped one, the whole crew dove in to grab her out, she was shook up but ok.

(Did I mention the crew that worked there were a bunch of stoners too).

So it was our turn, we were racing each other, I went full force on throttle for bit let off it and it didn’t seem to slow down. I smashed into the barrier.

When we all got off, the guy said, “you guys aren’t allowed back”!!!

One dude who worked there was a real odd ball, we started talking to him and he seemed drunk, he was throwing cotton candy at girls then looked the other way. I think they fired him.

One of the best deas that I scored at a yard sale was in the 80’s and they had this motor for sale. I had just bought a 16 foot steel boat (no rivets, all welds, heavy duty bass turd) for the camp and was looking for a motor for it. I asked him what was up with it and he said it won’t stay running. It was an outboard that I wasn’t familiar with (Ted Williams).

I got the compression gauges out of the jeep, it had good compression, plugs were in good shape and good spark and she fired up on the first pull, I let it run and after a bit it died. He said see what I mean, I said yeah, I’ll give you 5 bucks for it. Take it, he said. Obviously a gas issue was the problem. My guess was a weak diaphragm in the carb because as soon as it started to die, I could pump the bulb and she would run fine. Put a carb kit in it and it ran fine. I felt bad so I went back to the guy and told him if he needed that motor he could have it back. lol

He said, that’s ok, a deal is a deal, I ran that outboard for years on that boat.

I got a few outboards from garage sales but that one was the easiest fix.


It's time for me to head out and pierce some fish lips...

If I was Elon-rich, I don't think I would buy a yacht. The cost of maintenance and payroll is off the charts and how many times would you be on it, unless you lived on it?

I'm sure some here have gone on cruises, but cruises don't appeal to me, because if I go on a vacation, I don't want to deal with more people, risk getting sick from some fat-ass. I like privacy. Small and private cruises do appeal to me.

I love fishing boats for saltwater, but the ones that are big enough to fish, party, outrun a storm or get back fast if there is an emergency.

My other boat is a 1436 flatbottom jon. I'd take it duck hunting out on a lake with my Black Labrador retriever. He'd jump out of the boat, jump back in and shake off the water. 5 minutes later he'd jump out of the boat, jump back in and shake off the water. After a few hours of his antics there was water covering the entire bottom of the boat. When I put the boat back on the trailer at the boat ramp and pulled the drain plug, there was probably 5 gallons of water that came out.

There were also a few tree stumps at the boat ramp. Before I would launch my dog would lay a turd on top of a stump.

The Yellowfin boats look pretty damn cool....


I am and have always been partial to the Boston Whaler, I love center console boats and have owned a couple. I like an open boat with lots of room to move around and center consoles fit the bill for me.

Boston Whaler is a premium and excellent boat brand. Love them. Yellowfin are like Bugatti - great boat, but for the very wealthy.

Water guy checking in. I bought a 19 foot boat off Craigslist for $2,500, it was cursed from day 1. I think it ran probably for an hour in the 10 years I owned it. Neighbor is a shadetree boat mechanic and was constantly banging wrenches on it. Everytime I went out I needed to be towed in. Got it to my dock a couple years back and it sunk. Got it all dried out and running, got it home and sold it for $1,000, good riddance.

It was an 89 Cheetah with a relatively common carbed Merc 3.0 I/O.

I never named it, that may be why it was cursed. Now I just have my dock and sit on that drinking beer and watching people burning $4.50 gas and wave.

I was out with my buddy, one of his boats is pictured in the pic above. His boat stopped running, mine was flooded and his son was floating away from us on a waterski in the wind. With probably 1/2 dozen beers in me I thought "No problem, I was a Lifeguard 30 years ago I'll just swim out and save him. I jump in and swim to him, but he's wearing a life preserver and he's in much better shape than me, I'm winded AF. I fight the wind to get him the tow rope, then just fight for my life to get my ass back to the boat.

Really stupid, I could have put on a life preserver and grabbed a bumper or other flotation device before I jumped in, stupid ego almost drowned me in front of my kids.

Dear Abby,

I have been so blessed in my life. Great parents, great wife and
kids, great job, and a great education.

When I finally retired, I could hardly wait to spend time enjoying my
favorite pastime -- bass fishing. I got my own little fishing boat and
tried to get my wife to join me, but she just never liked fishing.

Finally, one day at the Bait & Tackle Shop, I got to talking to Sam,
the shop owner, who it turned out loves bass fishing as much as I do.
We quickly became fishing buddies. As I said, the wife doesn't care
about fishing; she not only refuses to join us, she always complains
that I spend too much time fishing.

A few weeks ago Sam and I had the best fishing trip ever. Not only
did I catch the most beautiful bass you've ever seen, only a few
minutes later Sam must have caught his twin brother! So I took a
picture of Sam holding up the two nice bass that we caught and showed
the picture to the wife, hoping that maybe she'd get interested.
Instead, she says she doesn't want me to go fishing at all anymore!
And she wants me to sell the boat! I think she just doesn't like to
see me enjoying myself.

What would you do? Tell the wife to forget it and continue my hobby
or quit fishing and sell the boat as she insists?
