He was type casted as a "military" guy so when the whole military/soldier genre faded in the 90s, he faded with it.

James Cameron thinks Biehn should have been a bigger star, and he thinks it's because he didn't "play the game":
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/mo...biehn-1228634/
The amount of movies Bruce Willis makes, I don't see how you can live a normal life where you see your kids all the time, you're taking them to school and baseball practice and you're coaching their teams. You're in their lives," says Biehn.
Biehn never has had a publicist and never really wanted the fame aspect of the business, even though his agent — and Cameron — both believed he had what it took to be a major star.
"Maybe what held Michael back was that he didn't like playing the Hollywood game — schmoozing people and all that. For him it was all about the work," notes Cameron. "And also the path to stardom is capricious, and can turn on a single choice. Every time you take a part the road forks. Major stardom passed him by, but that's not the point. He's done great work in many films over the years, and is well loved and respected for a few iconic characters. Who can forget Johnny Ringo in Tombstone?
He also began at a time where Hollywood was oversaturated with generic bodybuilder/martial arts action stars and Biehn was not really a bodybuilder nor much of a martial artist TMK. He did do steady work between Aliens and Tombstone but also had some bombs and TV movies, just didn't have the presence that Arnie or Van Damme had.
Just not a leading man material. Every role I've seen him in he is a very dark and gritty character and would make a boring hero.Back off, Warchild.
Seriously.

David Fincher (now highly respected, but then only a newcomer to directing big movies) asked to have his likeness appear on camera in Alien 3.
Biehn only agreed after demanding a considerably large sum.
This could go a long way to explaining his relationship with and shunning by Hollywood....and according to which an ensign might rank incomparably higher than a general, and according to which what was needed for success in the service was not effort or work, or courage, or perseverance, but only the knowledge of how to get on with those who can grant rewards, and he was himself often surprised at the rapidity of his success, and at the inability of others to understand these things

he never made the jump to leading man. all his movies or at least all of his best movies were supporting roles or ensemble casts.
I saw him at dragoncon about 20 years ago and he said his favorite role was being johnny ringo in tombstone. Keep in mind, he said this to a hall of aliens fanboys and larpers who were in costume for it. Weird choice imho."I'm not like most girls." -most girls
