It's political theater. The economy will indeed tank during the next presidency, and Israel has already made it clear they intend to strike Iran. So why not let the Republicans have the Oval Office during a time of crisis and solicit campaign donations from all the turmoil? Sounds like a smart play to me.

Whoever is in the Oval Office has no impact on the Democratic establishment, people like Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Ralph Nader, etc are lifers and will never lose their comfortable positions, the Oval Office is actually irrelevant to them.
