Don't normally talk about personal stuff on the forums, but this hit me hard.
Daughter is type 1 diabetic and we have had some struggles recently with her compliance. She's a teen, and I understand teens can be rebellious, but last night we almost lost her. She had gone without insulin for 12 hours or more and we didn't know. Her pump site (has insulin pump) came out while she was at a friends house and she didn't bother telling anyone until the morning.
She was just sick a couple of weeks ago, so we thought it was just her feeling under the weather. Her breathing got heavy and noticed she wasn't getting better. At that point, we knew something was terribly wrong. Her glucometer was reading a normal range, but it will do that when blood sugars get too high.
Got her to the ER and found her BS was over 600 and in DKA. She was really, really sick. She got flown to a children's hospital where they continued working for hours. Today she is finally out of DKA, and the doc admitted to us that they weren't sure that she would have lived last night. We almost lost her. I knew she was sick, but to hear that hits like a truck.
Pediatric Endo is having us switch over to a long lasting insulin that will prevent her from going in to DKA again, even if she's not compliant with boluses. The pump just requires too much attention and management that she is not responsible enough to handle.

Thanks for the kind words. She bounced back faster than they expected, so we are home now. Her blood work indicates it's going to take some time to get healthy again though. Her kidneys were in rough shape, PH was very low, A1C was over 12...
The doc did tell her she almost died because we wanted her to understand how serious this was, but it's hard to tell if it's sinking in. It might take her a few days of thinking it over before it does.
When we got home, my wife just broke down. I'm keeping it together for her.One party system; Most Republicans are Democrats, but no Democrats are Republicans.

Sorry to hear this , from my recent understanding type 1 is not something to take lightly.
My friends son recently got type 1 ,and the specialist said itβs almost unheard of to just become diabetic with type one,as your born with it. (What I was told anyways) .
The specialist is actually blaming Covid as the culprit, as heβs never seen an increase in young adults like this b4 .
I was unaware that my 35 YO neighbour across the street had type 1 , and the next thing you know he passed away from complications from it.
I also know my friends son has to watch his eating habits very carefully, and has had to cut back his boozing substantially. Prior to getting afflicted with diabetes he was a real party animal, but that put a damper on it .
Hope your daughter does better and takes it more seriously in the future . Iβm sure with a proper diet sheβll make it to a ripe old ageMake Misc great again

I have a daughter.
Now she's fully grown up and I always feel grateful for that and she is the #1 reason in my life to keep going.

Glad to hear she's ok.
My daughter has an incurable, terminal disease. I'm older now than her expected life span. My biggest fear right now is that when she gets into her late teens and early adulthood, she says fuk it and stops taking care of herself because all the meds she takes and medical devices she has to use are just to extend her life. Not cure the disease.
