Company reached out to me for a PM role...but

Company reached out to me because they need a Project Manager. They asked if I could send on my CV and schedule a call.

I did, and when they rang they explained the role.. however wouldn't give me the salary range , and wanted me to do a 1st round video interview where they expect me to give my salary expectations and why I would be good for the job.

They got my name from a previous colleague who highly recommended me and expected that I'd just be invited in to talk to the GM in person. However HR lady is trying to make me jump through hoops to "prove" why I would be right for them.

Currently an employees market in my country/profession.

Job would potentially be higher paid (how much isn't clear) but would be an extra 10-12hrs a week of driving.

Feels like they are trying to frame the whole thing as if I applied for the job instead of poaching me.

    What would you do?

Just the extra 2+ hours of driving a day, you better ask for at at least 50% raise.

I agree with this. My time away from work is very valuable and I'm not adding in that much extra driving for free or next to free let alone the transportation costs associated with it.

They promoted the job as being 25% on site. My contact in there says its "mostly" desk based. **** these HR people trying to BS you into a position with the idea of traveling to fancy cities.

2hrs of driving is like working another full day for free a week only to sit on my ass in an office.

Yup, considering starting up my own works. There are guys making bank in my country who are dumber than me and less skilled.

They will ALWAYS frame it like that, autist. Do you think they want to hire some reluctant fukk with no enthusiasm at all?

That said, the person who approached you seems to have done a terrible job if she doesnt even know the salery range. Probably some intern who needs to schedule x calls a week as their target.

if you're interested in the job you go at it with enthusiasm and a good faith effort as if you applied. however you also don't compromise on what you actually want in salary and in remote time.

They really should give you a range up front though, that part is frustrating. However it could be that they are trying to get more money into the position and don't want to give you too low of a #, but they also don't want to promise a range that isn't certain yet.

worst case scenario - it's good practice and you stick with what you're doing now.

Plus tolls, fuels, car wear etc it would have required a salary far above the going rate and given they didn't even offer me a salary range and wanted me to do the faceless interview yourself bs I decided against it.

Currently in my job still, however I was in the US for christmas snowboarding and sitting on a mountain top I realised I ****ing hate being a monkey chained to a desk for a salary.

I handed in my notice at my current job with the intention of starting my own property renovation and maintenance company.
There is a tone of work in this housing market in my country since lots of my peers are all desk based with no practical skills, so it's a very good time for me.

Current job has also offered me my position back if I need it or want to return in future. Which is great, like an insurance policy lol

Lots of my friends work in sales, or corporate jobs, management etc. All competent people but as men they lack any kind of ability to build anything themselves. It's very common in europe since most education pushed for my generation was no a skilled trade.

My friend who is a car sales man paid 13K for a job that would take any competent man 2-3 weeks of work. Despite his original quote of 8K and getting screwed over by the guy doing it he "just wants to pay to get the job finished"

Blew my mind. People have more money than sense. Only 2 people in my group of guy friends can hang a door.

Now having said that, my goal is not to be the one doing the manual work long term. But to build a team of people that follow my well documented procedures (something trades people lack big time).

Long story short, lots of people in office jobs can't do **** themselves and are willing to pay great money.

It's the exact same situation in USA. Handyman type jobs can charge whatever they want and now make more than many white collar jobs.

How did you develop the skills?

There can be a trade-off between doing something yourself and paying someone else to do it. If you can make $100/hr working and need to do some task that requires 50 hours of labour, it can make more sense to pay someone else $50/hr to do that task while you continue working and making $100/hr

that assumes you have unlimited hours to work at $100/hour, many can't work OT.

But also you are often paying more than $50/hr these days for tradie work.

Research salaries for that job. It'll give you a range. There are websites that give out this data

Yup exactly good points, but this is the argument I’ve seen others put forward for paying people to do work for you

There’s also the fact that variety in the stuff you do and learning new things can help maintain sanity, pushing the same button every day gets boring af

true - it's very satisfying to fix something and every day see the fruits of your labor. replace new sink - every time you use it a little hit of satisfaction "the reason this is so nice is because of me".

If its that much more commute is going to ruin your mentality about that job. If it's just driving around to the site that you're managing that's not as bad.

However, research the salary range for your experience and that role. You can usually get a good idea. Always ask for a little more than that.

My company has gone full transparency on the salary ranges of their positions, I hope that starts to catch on.
