Erm, I don’t think that actually happens. A $100k+ car is generally made of different materials. A door ding can be devastating. Aluminum, special composites, carbon fiber, and premium paints can make repairs costly and difficult. I was always nervous about not getting something fixed perfectly and having imperfections. Not because we couldn’t afford them, but because you don’t want your high dollar car to look like chit. It’s extremely difficult to get that “from factory” perfection.

and look at a lot of the wealthy people on car forums wrapping, ceramic coating, sealing, waxing their cars (often themselves)...many/most of them still "worry" about protecting their investment/dings.

Well, I guess we weren’t there then. It’s true what they say, that median income hits (38 -40 years old), then it starts to go down for most people. My wife and I were doing very well at 35-40, but then we decided to slow down. Stopped buying super nice cars, downsized our house (bought a farm instead), and bought a Chevy truck for towing livestock, tractor, and whatever else.

Chit was all one big money pit. House was state of the art, multi zone everything, and it cost thousands and thousands every year keeping up with. Cars were gas guzzlers, expensive insurance, bad fuel economy, lots and lots of state of the art add ons that could malfunction…

Our current vehicles have almost no options and are regular old cars now, and it’s nice not worrying about them anymore.

I can somewhat see this angle if we're talking a 30+ year old car. However, let's say a 2005 car that was rated "safe" in 2005...would I feel overly unsafe riding in it in 2023? Not really. Now if we're talking daily driving something like a 1992 Civic/Corolla/Mustang then yeah it might be a concern...definitely a concern if kids are riding in it.

The only “problem” with the UZ series v8s is that they’re so reliable the motor and mechanicals will outlast the car

My last UZ was barely run in at 200,000kms but the paint and suspension was gone and electrics were starting to be unreliable.

Felt bad to get rid of a car that had such a faultless drivetrain

Houses are one of the few things you can own that grow in value. Cars do not, not unless they're a rare classic. The average person's car no matter what it is will never be an asset, some people realize that and don't put the money into a nice and shiny car.

Wrong. You can get a Nissan Sentra for 21k. Plus you can always buy a use low mileage car in the 20k range which is going to be heaps better than a beater.

Not having to constantly worry about the body of a car is definitely one of the big advantages of driving a beater around. I was driving a beater for a number of years until getting a new car again, and I had almost totally forgotten about how you need to constantly worry about it getting scratched/dented/rusting.
