Gov. Newsom signs law raising taxes on gun and ammunition sales

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will double the taxes on guns and ammunition and use the money to pay for more security at public schools and various violence prevention programs under a new law Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Tuesday.

The federal government already taxes the sale of guns and ammunition at either 10 percent or 11 percent, depending on the type of gun. The law Newsom signed adds another 11 percent tax on top of that — making it the only state with its own tax on guns and ammunition, according to the gun control advocacy group Brady.

Newsom — a potential Democratic candidate for president beyond 2024 — has a reputation as one of the country’s most liberal governors. But he has often refused to raise taxes, even for causes he supports like combating climate change.

But it would have been difficult for Newsom to veto this tax increase, given his outspoken support for gun restrictions at the state and national level.

One of the few people I truly despise...most people aren't even worth the time to hate but Newsom is one of my few exceptions...this state was already a sh*thole and just when you thought things couldn't get worse....I was truly upset when Larry Elder lost although I fell victim to my delusions of grandeur in thinking anyone but a bleeding heart extreme leftist would ever be the governor here...

He’s angry about the SC decision that said magazine bans are unconstitutional, so he’s falling back on the only thing the SC hasn’t said was unconstitutional yet; taxes.

All he is going to do is create a black market, AKA a free market.

I’d like to see the SC finally rule that taxing over a specific amount is tyrannical. For instance, say they can’t tax more than they would tax other necessary items, like food, clothing, etc.
