Currently have a Ryzen 7 3700x
3080ti
Should I get the ryzen 7 7800x3d?
I'm not looking into upgrading the GPU yet until maybe the 5 series or 5ti/super .... would a 7800x3d CPU be bottlenecked with the GPU?
or is it even worth it at this point? my current CPU is already doing a decent-ish job at 1440p

This is what I was originally looking at ... But I'm thinking that is that "incremental" upgrade necessary when I do eventually plan to do a full gpu/cpu upgrade when the 5 series comes out. So getting a 5800x3d as a stop-gap might be an unnecessary expense?
But like what Optimus said, maybe I should just ignore the fomo lol and see. I mean so far no game rn is making me desperate for an upgrade .... but can never go wrong with more power nomsayin ... just wondering if its worth it lool.Sig line can't be a novel

you can run benchmarks and look at the graphs, your CPU is probably not bottlenecked, your GPU is probably pegged at 100% while the CPU is probably much lower.
Only certain games like flight simulator really like the x3d cache.
Or you can wait until black friday and see if there are any insane sales and the cost of upgrading on your current motherboard while selling your 3700x may be stupid cheap even though its not required.
Most games arent too CPU heavy, probably due to them all being cross platform with last gen consoles that had a crap CPU so programmers werent using it hard. I did notice a big jump going from intel 3770k to AMD 3600x but that was like a 5 generation jump. One or two generation jump isnt really worth it. I noticed the improvement in things like micro stutters or FPS drops in really dense game areas being fixed.🌺 Lauren Brooks Kelly (snailsrus) - Jul 25, 1991 – Jan 29, 2022

if FOMO is hitting get the 5800x3D
fomo hit me and i got that, for gaming is similar to the new 7000 series cpu's
i am now satisified and can wait for more years til something significant comes out, all without essentially buying a whole new system*** Free Thinker Crew ***

If you are talking about gaming, then you are GPU-limited. Upgrading your CPU won't do ****.
A 7800x on a 3080 ti will only see a bump of like 5% FPS.

If you upgraded to a 4080ti, on your 3700x, then you would see a 36% bump of FPS.

Or playing broken ass games like Squad and Hell Let Loose that pound 2 threads.
Apparently the 3d chips are great for that with the extra cache, but I can't justify spending the coin for 20-30 fps in those games that I don't play all that much (they require a massive time investment).RIP snails

Looking it up, the Ryzen 3700x is on TSMC 7nm node and the 7800x is on 5nm. One node isn't worth upgrading for, especially if you have to buy a new mobo and chit.
The next node coming out is N4, which AMD should be coming out with in 6-12 months. It'll be incrementally better than N5, probably like 5-10% performance increase. So not too exciting, but after that, the CPU timeline will get super fukky.
N3 chips will probably hit shelves in 2025 or early 2026, but their performance increase vs N4 is not looking very good. That node has room to mature and reach some material performance gains, but you will be waiting a LONG time for second gen N3.
N2 chips are going to hit around the 2027 window, and it is some really phucky different-ballgame technology that will not be mature at all. Its performance will barely be an upgrade over N3 (and N4 by extension) before the 2020s end, and its price will likely be pretty stupid.
The tl;dr is, this decade of CPUs is not looking very impressive. 2024 N4 is a good window to buy in. Hold off for a year, and then get whatever processor tier you can afford.Last edited by FAPhaggot; 09-22-2023 at 11:51 PM.

Playing primarily in 1440p or 4k (with dlss if given the option) ... Wouldnt a better cpu allow me to sustain and have better frames at higher resolutions though? Because of right now, playing certain games at native 4k is kinda stuttery for me unless I put dlss (1440p not much of an issue) ... I usually try to hit 60-90 for most my games, but I'm happy with 60.
interdasting. yeah i can hold out for an year if I had to I suppose.Sig line can't be a novel

There isn't a wall in sight, where companies are like yeah, this will be the last silicon transistor. The road looks clear to 2030.
To me, it looks like the far end of a logistics curve, where you have to work exponentially harder to keep making gains. It's like an RPG grind... new levels unlock fast when you make a new character, but then you grind for days to move up 1 level by endgame.
One day that curve will get so flat that progress will all but stop. There are silicon alternatives being explored, but I haven't seen any heir apparant right now.FA Crew
