He's been out of wrestling long enough the kids that actually cared when he was wrestling are grown by now. Its not like they have to worry about crying kids and loss of merch sales for being naughty.
What else is he gonna do? They don't need him to flounder around and take losses like Brock. It didn't help Theory and it doesn't help anyone else.
He can still move in the ring. He still has the charisma and better mic skills than 99% of the roster anyway.
A heel turn story would be so easy. He's given his all over the years. He gives and gives and gives and the fans continue to boo.
So why not build off that?
Even if he's only there for a few months, it's better than him constantly losing doing his usual shtick.
C'mon Trips. Give us something to care about.

A move much anticipated when was actively wrestling regularly in late 2000's or early 2010's...they couldn't find a way to do it and completely dropped it off....but I don't see the purpose of doing it now...he's not wrestling much anyways....there is like one important match of his once every 2 years....it's not gonna happen until and unless he returns for a regular run...

The children still love him. A lot of kids that look in the 6-10 year old range (that would never have seen him wrestle in his peak early 2010s PG Super Cena era) love him. You can always see young kids in the crowd with his t-shirt and hat on even when he isn't advertised or on the shows.
I get people want a heel "Hollywood" Cena but honestly, it probably is best to keep him as a nostalgia pop a couple times a year, guest ref, guest host every now and then while putting over some young upstart and selling some new bright colored merchandise.
If he was to seriously comeback for a 3-4 month semi consistent full-ish time run at the world title level, then I see the "Hollywood" Cena heel act working. But with his movie schedule I don't see a heel Cena ever happening.RUTHLESS AGGRESSION

LA Knight helping Cena is a perfect set-up. They battle the Bloodline further pushing LA Knight to a title match with Roman. Cena tries to return the favor during the match but ends up costing LA Knight the match and the title. Cena doesn't like LA Knight's attitude because he didn't mean it and didn't appreciate his help and turns on LA Knight.
LA Knight has the rocket strapped feuding with Cena as the heel who gives him the rub.
It's right there on a silver platter Trips. You're welcome.
