Sometimes people just have to die for their crimes. Doesn't matter if it was premeditated or he was mentally unstable. Sometimes the only retribution is their death. Prison is suppose to be a form of rehabilitation. There is no rehabilitation from behavior like that, nor does he deserve it.

I agree with the death penalty existing, but there's an argument to be made that if someone is so severely mentally ill, that despite their horrific acts, it would be immoral to take their life.


Case in point: The Greyhound bus incident which was worse than this. The dude literally hacked an innocent victim to death, cut off his face, cut off his head, and ate parts of him. They even found his nose and eyes in the dude's pockets.



But he was so mentally ill he was sent to a psychiatric hospital, since it would be immoral to send him to prison or to death row. I had a friend with schizophrenia who had a psychotic break, broke into someone's house and stole a knife thinking he was an interdimensional traveller who had to commit suicide to get back to his home dimension. He ran at the cops with the knife and they legally would have been justified in shooting him, but tazed him instead.

When he got treatment, he was shocked and mortified at what he'd done and returned to normal with medication. You shouldn't kill someone if it's an even remotely treatable illness at fault.
