Because a lot of fights end up on the ground, and it's better to not be defenseless. You can be the best striker, but as soon as a blue or purple belt takes you down, you're as helpless as a baby. Some BJJ knowledge goes a long ways to at least being able to get back to your feet.

I beat the ass out of some BJJ guy...I know some judo and have boxed since I was a kid. I think he was just overconfident, honestly. I fought _sword in my backyard and I had a pretty decent strength advantage but he actually knows wtf he's doing so he owned me. I also got my ass handed to me by one of my buddies who wrestled in high school and outweighs me by 80 pounds not that long go. So, I think there's more to it than just style, or training.

MMA is the best option to train, as it shows you a little of everything. BJJ alone I think is risky. But good BJJ makes your MMA much better. Why not be well rounded?

saw some navy seal bjj teacher guy being interviewed on some random video and he said the best defense is running away...said he will choose running away at every moment it's an option. Not sure if the pride of most dudes would allow...I guess he knows he has nothing to prove.

Gi bjj is a sport.

No gi is good if taught by a wrestler.

Your best bet for self defense is kickboxing and some wrestling or no gi. If you want to compete then a good well rounded mma school.

all modern MMA fighters train for both BJJ and stand up.

These days they got MMA gyms everywhere, you dont even have to go to a BJJ or karate gym.


For self defense BJJ would be good if only you and 1 other person but in a crowded area you will just get your head stomped on. But now since its so popular it would be good to know it incase someone trying to use it on you how to get out of it and punch them in their face

BJJ is great for training and great for the sport of MMA.

In a real fight, BJJ sucks. You can learn most of the actually useful moves pretty quickly, and it's not even BJJ it's just basic ground combat. I work with a ton of guys who are BJJ instructors, playing by their rules, they can all kick my ass. When we go more straight 1on1 type stuff, even rolling, they obviously have a huge advantage, but it doesn't negate a size/strength advantage. The only ones that can regularly "beat" me, are the ones close to my size and strength, keeping in mind I have very, very limited knowledge or BJJ. This disparity gets even worse in the real world when environment and tools are considered.

Also, the whole "most fights end up on the ground" thing, is because most people don't know how to do any type of stand up. In a normal street fight, in terms of the "arts", boxing is probably still most important. Wrestling 2nd. BJJ a distant 3rd.

I’ve been in enough fights, I don’t want to get hurt, I will happily de escalate. If that doesn’t work I’ll run, if that isn’t an option I will use a weapon.

If I am restrained, grabbed, or taken down, bjj is the quickest best art for separating and making space so I can repeat my first options.

bjj is great for self defense and anyone telling you its not because of 'street fighting' doesnt consider that the bjj guy can also do street fighting while implementing bjj techniques. both can swing with punches but the bjj guy can also get back up in better positions, control paces, use pressure and look for ways to finish the other guy with chokes. the average person who has never trained can last about 40 seconds in a real fight before adrenaline will wear off and now they are gassed- bjj (or other combat sports) train you to build endurance to go longer in combat situations

LMAO yeah made me laugh take my measley reps.but its obvious you guys are amateurs.there is no best martial art.you gotta be careful when you strike a BJJ guy so i think the best thing to do is use a judo waza tech and try to throw him to the ground on his head but hes gonna take you down too so its a bit complicated.you gotta do something hes not gonna expect.so i would go for the head,solar plexus and groin.if it connects well there isnt really a good defense because that leaves you open.then you can do whatever you want to them.i dont have time for that chit anymore so i just carry a knife.but if you can can slam them to the ground its usually over for them.dont play their game.kick him in the head,whatever you gotta do.do not go to the ground with a trained BJJ guy.if you do dont panick and grab your knife and stab him.im ded fkn srs.ive done it before and ill do it again.best advice your gonna get if you wanna win.guns dont count
