So for the past month I've been styling on the youngbloods playing basketball and a week ago after the game my knee got swollen and stayed that way. Went to the ortho today and he said I've torn my meniscus. He drained the fluid off of it and gave me a steroid injection and some mobic. He told me to stay active and that I wasn't going to make it worse but if I wanted to fix it for good he could do surgery. Has anyone dealt with this type of injury before?

it 100% depends on the severity. I've torn mine three times, and never had to have surgery. Gnarly brace with gears and chit, and extremely restricted mobility for 2 months, and then 2 months of limited mobility and introduction of light PT, and then 2 months of regular PT and a less crazy brace.

That honestly sounds way worse than what I have going on. I can do anything but it just hurts the next day and I can't bend it well for 4 or 5 days afterwards. The MD told me bracing wouldn't really do anything for mine but that a compression sleeve would help with pain, which it does
What type of stretching? Any youtube channel recommendations?6'2"

Depends on the extend of the tear, how flappy it is, where the tear is at. Many people have tears and do not know about it at all. Some people have small flappy tears that need to be excised or the knee locks.
Best bet is to see how it plays out, strengthen the quads, avoid twisting with significant weight.

Yeah these instances were pretty fukked lol. Like legit couldn’t walk stairs without potentially falling or being in severe pain. My ortho had me get this brace, and basically said to wear it any time I’m doing something that could put my knee at risk again (so basically BJJ or snowboarding) for the first year

lol I mean the doctor said it was fine. After he drained off the fluid and gave me the injection it feels fine
I still have no idea when mine actually happened. I noticed it was getting stiff after the game ended but I thought that was just part of getting old6'2"

If you get surgery, you will almost definitely eventually get arthritis, remember, surgery simply means they will remove part or all of the padding, so you will basically be bone on bone. this is something doctors don’t tell you, but you can find out on your own in 1, 5, 10 or 20 years and you’re not going to have a fun time, I guess you can hope that Elon musk will invent some hybrid tesla gel insertable knee meniscus by the time your surgery will **** you up.
But my point is that surgery comes with a heavy price and future danger, and this is something people in this thread don’t know, and the doctors do not tell you.
if there is any way at all for you to improve this without surgery, you should do that, PRP injection is an obvious choice, there is another injection they do to regenerate tissue, but I forgot the name, obviously you have to do exercises and stop doing whatever activity caused this problem, such injuries are the price we pay for being young morons and playing sports in unsafe ways.
Most people also find that supplementing with all that typical stuff like turmeric , glucosamine and many other things significantly improves the condition as well.
One more thing about surgery, remember, even if you were to get surgery and recover, aside from that danger of arthritis and bone on bone in the future, you also have high risk of re-injury, all those people who say they’re back at 100% after surgery are completely clueless, people can and do a re-injure themselves very very easily, if you got surgery and you’re back at 100% you should count your blessings and immediately stop doing the activity that caused the injury, because you will reinjure yourself!

Been dealing with the U shaped tear on my right knee for 3 years now... no surgery, 2 cortisone shots spread over 3 years to reduce inflammation, was getting better but re injured it a while back. I wear a level 3 brace when playing sports and it fills up with fluid frequently, but still works. Cant get full flexion on bending it anymore, eventually will need a full replacement due to all the scar tissue causing arthritis. Not interested in surgery and recovery for 6 months until its to the point I cant use it well at all.

The fluid build up and inflammation is the only reason I even went to the doctor in the first place. It hurts a little but nothing compared to my back. If I can keep the fluid out and inflammation down I'll never get surgery. Luckily my doctor told me I don't have any arthritis and my knees look excellent on xray. My doctor told me the surgery wouldn't be a big deal and if I could keep off it for 2 days following surgery I could resume full physical activity 10 days post op without needing PT
