UK’s CMA: Microsoft Right, Sony Wrong On ‘Call Of Duty’ Competition Question
Microsoft now appears to well on its way to the overall approval of its Activision Blizzard acquisition, as it’s just scored probably its largest victory yet. The UK’s CMA, the most skeptical regulatory body during this whole process, has just issued a provisional conclusion that they believe that Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard will not lessen competition in the console gaming space in the UK, a point Sony has been attempting to argue from the start.
The CMA cites some sort of “significant new evidence” that Microsoft provided to them apparently proving its repeatedly stated point that it would not make any financial sense for them to take Call of Duty away from 150 million PlayStation players and make it Xbox exclusive, given the established playerbase for the series. It’s not precisely clear what this evidence was, as this point has seemed fairly obvious from the start, but the CMA now concludes that Microsoft still has enough incentive to do what it’s promising to do and keep offering Call of Duty on PlayStation.
Sony’s arguments against this idea have begun to spiral into truly bizarre territory, offering theories that Microsoft could release some sort of buggy version of Call of Duty on PlayStation, degrading the experience for its rival. Apparently the idea that Microsoft would actively sabotage its own product to harm PlayStation was not terribly convincing to regulators.
The CMA isn’t done yet. They say they are still investigating the cloud gaming side of all this, a space where Microsoft is dominant, and they will issue a final order at the end of April. But this current statement is a huge deal, and may be the first major domino that indicates this deal is well on its way to ultimate global approval, even if it still has places like the US’s FTC to get through. If Microsoft was able to convince the initially skeptical CMA, other regulatory bodies will likely follow.

Sweet. Hope this puts extra pressure on Sony to give us a truly amazing FPS soon. Imagine a Killzone soft reboot on PS5.

Man. I was so young playing Resistance 2 but I remember some of the boss fights, they were great. Giant sea monster when you're on the platform, or what about the giant one that was the size of a building and you had to fight it. Can't believe those boss fights existed so long ago

Everyone has these fond memories of the old ps2/3 shooters and I remember playing them and thinking they were literal dogwater compared to cod/halo/gears/battlefield. that's what you played if you just didn't have an Xbox and lived under a rock.
Yes... come and let us make an end of it. It matters not, even cornered, to my last breath... I remain who and what I am. I will not hide, nor tremble, nor beg. Let them come and reckon with fury that is DOOM defiant.

We appreciate the CMA’s additional detailed and objective analysis. Its provisional update underscores a growing consensus by those with access to the most current data that this deal will create more competition in the console market, not less.

In March, the CMA published reports from six "market participants" who discussed the merger.
All six were in favor of the merger. This, alongside public comments from people like Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, apparently carried quite a bit of weight.

How boring, GOD of GOAT is wayyyyyyyyy better!!! Sony will create its own FPS and It'll be way better than COD!!!! Hopefully they create Kayak Nazi simulator. Where you shoot Nazi's on a Kayak and save everyone. Knowing Sony this game would have the best grass of any FPS ever created!!!

Tbh their service has become much better since about a year. And I do think it’s due to game pass
I absolutely don’t think they would have offered pretty much every ps4 first party game on their subscription If it wasn’t for game pass
Competition is good. Sony mogging Microsoft first party quality last gen also caused Ms to start caring more about the quality of their softwareLast edited by ScramFranklin; 03-24-2023 at 06:36 PM.

Good. This last COD is unbelievable trash. Wtf were they thinking changing everything that made it COD. Im never touching COD again unless they change it back.
Sony needs to stop being a whiny bish and just make a blockbuster AAA FPS. Or maybe get the next Titanfall to be an exclusive somehow and start building it up.
