Fighters are addicted to the thrill as much as the money. Freakshow events were rare until very recently. If a fighter wanted to stay around longer than they should, they would either have to fight no names on local shows for pennies or get sacrificed to the next crop of prospects, and take real damage. These days, with youtubers and chit, these events are popping up everywhere. It's a chance for old timers to participate in big events without the danger of fighting legit boxers. It's hard to blame them.
I don't mind things like this in all honesty. Roy is in little danger of taking any real damage and he gets to make money and make the walk again. It'll probably be a complete chitshow of a fight though.

I don't know, it looks pretty sad to me. I certainly would not consider this a big event, is anyone really going to pay for this? Roy was clearly very uncomfortable with his physical appearance against Tyson but taking the opportunity to get in the ring for an exhibition with Tyson is understandable, but this is embarrassing. What is the point? There is no way he comes out looking good from this. Who's up next, Hasbulla?

I don't think he cares about looking good. He was fighting complete randoms for years. He got knocked out by Enzo Maccarinelli. He just loves the game. He can't need money because he cashed the fuk out in that Tyson fight.
It seems like most people agree with you though. I saw that it was in a big arena (like 17k capacity) and assumed it would sell out due to the legendary names on the card + it's in Pettis' hometown. I just checked the tickets and it's going to be fookin empty unless they start giving tickets away.
It would probably do ok if they streamed it on YouTube for like $9.99 but I also just read that they're charging $49.99 lmao. It's obviously a freakshow event but they're pricing and marketing it as a legit boxing promotion. It's looking like a total failure atm.

What about caring about dignity, self-respect, health, brain damage (maybe that is actually the reason)? Maccarinelli was not a random at all, he was a very experienced, successful, former WBO champion boxer so nothing to be embarrassed about there, no comparison to this. I am a big fan of Roy. I grew up in his hometown, Pensacola, FL, remember the phantom opponent, finally firing his father, etc.
If it is about the love of the game and needing that excitement of competition, challenge someone like Chuck Lidell to fight in BKFC. That would be an epic of two legends the same age and they would make tons of money, maybe not a legit matchup for Chuck but you get my point. This just doesn't make any sense, it is like they just drew two names from a hat, and they likely won't even make any money for it considering no one is going to pay and it is a promotion associated with Jorge Masvidal, not someone I would put any level of trust in doing the right thing when things don't go his way.

Again, I don't think he cares about any of that. He's addicted to the thrill of a fight. There is no other explanation.
I didn't mean Maccarinelli was a random btw, was just using that as another example (along with fighting randoms) of how he clearly doesn't care and just wanted/wants to fight. Roy is one of the greatest ever. Getting KO'd by someone of the caliber of Maccarinelli (who was also at the end of his career) was a sure sign that it was time to walk away, but he couldn't. He went straight back to fighting randoms.
The only thing about this one is that Pettis is not a boxer and is as pillow fisted as they come. Does he even have a legit KO on his record from the WEC/UFC/PFL? The only one that comes to mind is the Wonderboy fight where he jumped off the cage so not really relevant. And all of those fights were in 4oz gloves against smaller guys. I think Roy will avoid taking any damage. Pettis might only be 36 but he's extremely washed.

Well, Roy has explained why he is doing this. He says he was the first to have the idea of boxing/MMA crossover fights wanting to box Anderson Silva back in the day but never got to do it so just wants to do it because it was his idea and has never done it and he doesn't even have to get below 200lbs. What great motivation to tune in for this disaster.

Roy hasn't forgotten how to box while Pettis has never learned, and Roy's hands were still fast af against Tyson. He doesn't need head movement or chin against Pettis, Roy is one of the most skilled boxers ever against an overweight, mediocre MMA fighter known for kicks and submissions. Expect a lot of hugging.
