President Donald Trump carried 2,497 counties across the country that together generate 29% of the American economy, according to a new study by the Brookings Institution.

President-elect Joe Biden won 477 counties that together generate 70% of U.S. GDP.

NYC alone is 8% of US GDP. That's 1 city with 5 counties that alone really sways percentages, mostly through Wall Street, ultra expensive real estate, and tourism. Meanwhile most people in NYC are broke AF.

I notice there's no mention of what share of the US population lives in the counties Biden won. I wonder why that is!! NYC and nearby counties are 3/4ths of the entire state's population. Srsly between NYC and Buffalo it's basically Alabama. So win just ~10 of NY's 62 counties then you're talking about the high majority of the state's population and GDP. NY is an extreme example, but California is similar. If someone wins LA county, the Bay Area counties, and San Diego County that's a high majority of the state's population and thus it's GDP. Win about 10 of its 58 counties and you're talking about 3/4ths of its population as well. Win those 10 and you're talking a high majority of its GDP.

Similar across the country. A President winning a small number of counties represents the majority of the state's population and thus automatically most of its GDP.


Conclusion: urban population counties tend to vote majority blue, GDP is where the majority of population is. The CNBC article is doing nothing more than showing the urban and rural divide. The suburban divide is more nuanced. OP can't do math, as always.
