Someone who lost their job right after Christmas ended and hasn't looked for one since isn't counted as unemployed, boyo. If we truly had record low unemployment our labor force participation wouldn't be where it is. Labor force participation is still only half recovered to pre-pandemic levels. With very small ebbs and flows the labor participation was flat from 2013 to 2020. Baby boomers began retiring before that, so a flat labor participation rate was great news. We still need a couple million more people working to have actual low unemployment.

Mother of God, how do you interpret what you just wrote from the data? Obama reduced unemployment? How specifically did he do that? To be more precise, if you look at the data in the FED link I provided you can see labor participation was flat from 2013 to 2018, with a small uptick in 2019. Yes Trumpers got overly excited for a small improvement, just like Trump overhyped the increase of 2019 like it was the greatest thing in decades. It wasn't, and just like with Obama there isn't much evidence of Trump's decisions causing the slight uptick in labor participation.

Factors like seasonally adjusted vs non seasonally adjusted, household survey and conventional survey are both reported in BLS but only the rosier one gets reported in mainstream media. Who is classified as unemployed is different than just a decade or two ago. How inflation is calculated has been rejiggered several times to make it look lower than it really is, whether there's a Dem or Rep in the White House, whether reported inflation is high or low.

Geography and geology are a MFer. It's mostly mountains (I hate driving through it), which has historically hampered its development. And for a century and a half it has been EXTREMELY dependent on its coal mining economy. Good jobs that required little more than strong backs and a willingness to die before old age.

Let's remember it exists separately from Virginia only because it broke away from Virginia to join the Union in the Civil War. Places like Southern Ohio, Southern Pennsylvania, Eastern Kentucky are just a schitty for the same geographical and geological reasons: mountains + coal economy. The biggest city in WV, it's capital has less than 50,000 people, lulz. A rural state like Maine is just as schitty, but at least they have lots of pretty ocean to look at and get tourism from.
