    Earthquakes

One hell of a mess with that Syria & Turkey earthquakes isn’t it? More than 2000 deaths, that will no doubt rise. Sad

They had a small one 3.8 around Buffalo this morning as well, That sh!t can happen anywhere.

Have any of you experienced one?

I did, but only one, back in the early 80’s, It was a 5.7 and I was about 60 miles from it’s epicentre. Freakiest thing I ever experienced. I had just worked a long night shift and was in the fart sack grabbing some Z’s when it woke me. I didn't know what it was but I knew it wasn’t right. I lived in one of a bunch of small apartment buildings. I jumped up, looked out the window and the other complexes were moving, I was like fuk that, I’m outta here and out the door I went, I lived on the second floor and was half way down the apartment stairs when it stopped. That’s when it hit me, I was buck ass naked standing in the stairwell of a multiplex building. For the record only 2 of my neighbors saw my lily white ass and giblets before I got back to the apartment.

The aftershock about 30 hours later was 5.1 but I was awake and clothed for that one, but still not something I don’t want to experience again.

Now, tell me your earthquake story if you have one.

In Southern Illinois there is the New Madrid fault line. Many years ago there was a quake and the Mississippi River flowed upstream for a bit.

LOL. I never have experienced an earthquake, but surprised because before the current admin's cancellation of anything fossil fuels, this area was fracking regularly. Over in Oklahoma, they experience earthquakes as a direct result of fracking. So, double-edged sword.

2009 I was in Dangriga Belize with a bunch of students and a couple other faculty members. In the middle of the night there was an earthquake. I was sleeping and gradually woke up. My bed was rocking severely forward and back. My first thought was I was really sick and dizzy, but then it became clear what was happening.

We all, our gang and the locals, got up and walked out on the street. Someone had a radio on. After a few minutes one of the faculty members said "TSUNAMI!". We were like 50 feet from the ocean. She started up our bus and started loading students to drive inland. The radio was saying nothing about a tsunami and the locals didn't seem panicked.

I was in boxers and went in the hotel to get pants on. When I came out, the bus was gone. They left me to die in the tsunami. I still wasn't too worried but figured I'd better join them so I found a friend with a car and we drove up to where the team was.

There was no tsunami, but in driving up to the hills we drove over a bridge that turned out to be damaged beyond repair. The US army constructed a temporary bridge and they tore down and rebuilt the other bridge.

A couple students, who had a bit to drink the night before, were swinging in hammocks on the roof of the hotel and slept through the whole thing and didn't know about it until the next day.

In addition to the bridge damage, a few water tanks toppled and it led to a new building code for water tanks to include seismic considerations.

That's a pretty cool story Gabbar, I can understand the fear of a tsunami, I would be high tailing it out of there as well

Death toll from Turkey, Syria earthquake passes 11,000, I watched a bit of the rescue efforts last night, pretty damn sad for sure. You can hear some people beneath the rubble crying out for help. I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through.

I felt the Northridge earthquake in LA, which was 6.7. That **** shook the earth beneath me and was terrifying. Can't imagine what folks in Turkey are going through. I heard there were A LOT of buildings with poor construction/structural design issues, which led to the collapse of something around 15,000 buildings. RIP...

    Yes...several.

The last big one for us was the 1985 one in the bay area.
    I was a geology/music major.

I feel terrible for what Turkey and contiguous regions are enduring.
When I see those poor people, especially the kids, being pulled out of the rubble it damn near brings a tear to one's eye.
    But....that's just me.

Being an old carpenter I didn't see one g/damn piece of rebar jutting out from the walls of any destroyed buildings*%?
    Maybe my eyes failed me.

when I saw aerial video showing devastation, I knew Turks would want some answers. Some buildings are completely fine, maybe broken glass or a few cracks, and right beside there are piles of rubble with not a single wall in one piece.

They are still pulling survivors out. That's hard to believe after this long. It must be pure hell for those trapped there for 11 days. Especially for those with family members trapped with them and they go silent, never to be heard from again. Heartbreaking.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has struck southern Turkey, weeks after a deadly quake devastated the region.

Turkey's disaster and emergency agency Afad said the tremor occurred at 20.04 local time (17.04 GMT).

Witnesses told the Reuters news agency there had been further damage to buildings in Antakya.

    Howdy....

One of several on YT showing the new fissure that opened up post quake.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiDv...hannel=ITVNews

The outcrops revealed (13 stories deep) are going to be very interesting for geologists to study and map out.
It's terrible to see what these poor people are having to endure.
