Is the PS3 the worse console of all time?

Sure it gave us the birth of some great franchises and games because sony had the time and resources to invest on making them, but the complicated architecture gave us sub par multiplats that performed better on the 360 and it's very likely gameplay suffered because more time/resources had to be allocated to optimize PS3 games.

In comparison I think PS4/X1 gen games ran better and gameplay mechanics jump was far greater than one would expect between gens.


TLDR PS3 held back that console gen, also had the biggest fanboys because it was the first "console war" with widely available internet which was close and arguably MS "won"

Infamous, killzone, motorstorm, resistance were ok at the time but there's a reason why they're dead franchises and noone misses them.... not to mention several exclusive mediocre games/flops like MAG, war/starhawk, Lair, allstar battle


Basically uncharted and TLOU were the only new games that were revolutionary for the time, to the point now all sony games follow the same cookie cutter formula

hmmm ps3 vs ps4.... while ps4 load times and menu was a lot faster and smoother, the menu on ps3 going back to the homescreen was a pain in the ass.... on the other hand ps3 had a ton of NEW games/franchises come out and originally had free online gaming.

ps4 was more polished but it was just rehashes and sequels of all the same chit

I had a dreamcast after the fact i got it cheap like $25 used and it was great, ahead of its time, way better than saturn. too bad it flopped commercially. it had some good games and the graphics were really crisp, i know ps2 was more powerful but it didnt have as good antialiasing and colors were more washed out looking on ps2

The Dreamcast flopping in North America had absolutely NOTHING to do with it's quality, and EVERYTHING to do with Sega doing a terrible job at marketing and production costs, they basically doomed it from the beginning. There's a documentary I'm sure you can find on YouTube that explains the entire history and demise of the Dreamcast.

Poor Saturn sales, increased competition from Sony, and uninspired marketing campaigns all played their part in the console’s failure. Above all though, the Dreamcast was an incredibly advanced piece of hardware, and it was expensive to produce. Sega was selling it at a loss, and it wasn’t able to recoup costs in software sales.
The Sega Dreamcast hit store shelves in Japan on November 27th, 1998. The console enjoyed moderate success for a time. On paper, things looked great. Consoles completely sold out in the first few weeks, and they could barely keep up with orders.

The truth was that Dreamcast was doomed from the start. Because the hardware of the Dreamcast was so advanced, it was very expensive to produce. So expensive that Sega had to sell the console at a loss. This means Sega had to make up the revenue with software sales.

The best way to do that was to release the console in the US in the hopes that the software sales from the two giant markets would make up for the loss.


The Sega Dreamcast was released on September 9th, 1999, in the US. It did strong sales at first due to the launch titles Sonic Adventures, Soulcalibur, and Ready 2 Rumble. It even managed to outsell the PS2 in 2000 due to this strong launch, but it wouldn’t save Sega.

Definitely not the worst of all time but the chitty six axis replacing the dual shock, the red light of death and taking away backwards compatibility (PAL territories) sets it back for me.
