Thoughts on the 2023 Toyota Sequioa TRD Pro?

I'm digging the new gen Sequioa, but man the ADM on the TRD Pros are stupid.

If I were in the market for a larger SUV that's most likely what I'd be considering as a top contender.

Not a fan of big family van SUV's that try to larp around as off-roaders. It's like just buy a Jeep Wrangler and a basic family SUV if you want to do off-roading and have a family vehicle. Trying to combine the both just doesn't work.

Massive disappointment on a multitude of levels. I have been driving Tundras for the last 20+ years (01, 10, and current 18) and was greatly hoping to upgrade to a 3G Sequoia after seeing the disappointing 3G Tundra. I still am holding out hope that they don’t equally screw up the next gen 4Runner like they did the Tundra/Sequoia.

    1. Dropped the Torsen CDL and various drive modes from the 2G (and Land Cruiser), as well as dropped the various drive configurations it enabled. Now just the basic two speed part time system from the Tundra without a real locker. All competitors are at least offering some form of 4Auto or AWD, in addition to superior locking differentials. Massive loss.

    2. The 3rd row seats are not able to fold flat with the floor due to the placement of the hybrid battery (more on that later). This makes the cargo room need to have a laughably low rent shelf system that kills the cargo capacity. Seriously, it has the same cargo room as a 4Runner now. Even more laughable when trying to fold the 2nd row down. Lots of videos out there showing what an abortion of a cargo system this is, and how incredibly smal and not user friendly it is, especially when compared to the competition. Massive loss.

    3. Hybrid only power train that does not deliver the performance or efficiency that it should. Middle of the pack in all areas, and blown away by the top engines from the Big 3. They seriously waited 14 years to give consumers a hybrid system with a generic NiMH battery from a 2000 Prius, and a 400w inverter system that needs the truck running to use, and can’t cut a 2x4? Joke compared to the competition.

    4. 22.5 gallon advertised gas tank that reads empty at 17 gallons? Not even 350 mile range? Do better.

    5. Dropped the roll down rear window? Seriously? This is one of the most beloved features from 2G and 3G Tundra, 2G Sequoia, and 4Runner owners.

    6. Interior is decent for a Toyota. But interiors from Jeep Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, GMC Yukon, and Escalade all are MUCH superior.

I could go on and on…….

Trust me, I wanted to love the 3G Sequoia BAD. Still think they are the best looking full size out there, but in basically all other metrics there are much better options.

$14k difference between that and the base LX, OP I think you've owned a bunch of Lexus so might as well go for the real thing, and I'm sure it's a lot easier to buy a LX than it is to find a TRD pro at msrp.

Seems like they did this across the board? 70k+ and you can’t even get that basic option they had previously. Fuk outta here.

Yeah looking at it I would want to turn it into a doomsday suv but ...

Its fukkin 80k. I could get an older one, gut it, rebuild the engine to a monster, add a secondary gas tank, lift it, and build out the interior the same price if not less. And it would have a better 4x4 system.

Mechanically the only difference is the use of a clutch plate in the transfer case to allow for lock up while driving, the eggheads might have had good reason to omit it and removing it might make the transfer case more robust, but it was probably done to make room in the budget for all the nanny systems and infotainment features. got to give the people what they want.

Tundras have never had 4A or the Torsen center diff......... or any locking differential for that matter.

I very well may be misunderstanding what you are trying to say, but a Torsen Locking Center Diff operates much differently than a traditional transfer case and especially a plated one. Vastly superior system that has proven remarkably robust. I think you are 100% correct in assuming it was a cost saving measure to try and keep the Sequoia at a price point that differentiates it from the LX600 (which does get Torsen Center Diff, fold flat storage, etc).

Vastly superior system that has proven remarkably robust. I think you are 100% correct in assuming it was a cost saving measure to try and keep the Sequoia at a price point that differentiates it from the LX600 (which does get Torsen Center Diff, fold flat storage, etc).
hmm i am familiar with the torsen center diff, my gx has one, by far my favorite design feature. I didn't think they put those in anything but their full time 4wd models: GX, 4runner limited, and LC/LX. I think the "auto 4wd" mentioned ITT is just a conventional transfer case where the front output shaft engages with a clutch, i could be wrong though.

I absolutely love my 2022 Tundra. Like WAY more than I expected to coming from my 2017 Tundra. Sequoia is literally the exact same vehicle with a different body. I have a hard time believing you would be disappointed.

Check out a thread I made on my 22 Tundra if you want my thoughts on it: https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showt...hp?t=181568543

Edit: If you don't want to pay the "market" mark up you can probably wait about a year and pay MSRP. Now that the Tundra supply/demand has gotten better, I see very few dealers charging market adjustments. When I bought mine, almost every single dealer was charging anywhere from $5,000-$15,000 depending on the trim from SR5 to TRD Pro and Capstone.

2nd Gen Sequoias have a REALLY cool drive train where it has more traditional part time 4x4, as well as full time 4 wheel drive via a Torsen center diff. Best of all worlds.

They can run 2wd, 4H (full time 4 wheel drive), 4x4 high (locked center diff), and 4x4 low (locked center diff).

that is slick. Id be pissed if I was a sequoia owner looking to trade in for the new gen. Looks like we have reached a point where Toyota is sacrificing utility for looks and features. sad to see.

    Extremely disappointing.

But it ultimately may work in their favor in my case. May just end up biting the bullet and spending the extra $20K and get an LX600 Luxury with the black appearance package in the BEAUTIFUL Nori green.

Torsen and fold flat 2nd and 3rd row. Bummer it doesn’t have pano sunroof or fully digital center cluster, but I’ll live.

Cayenne is too small behind 2nd row for my two dogs, X7 doesn’t do it for me, GLS AMG and Range Rover are $150K (and glorious), and domestic full size aren’t doing it for me.

Currently drive a 2020 Jeep SRT. So if they drop their new High Output TT I-6 in the new redesigned Grand Cherokee for the SRT version, that would probably be top of the list.

those sequoias are nice, but if i owned one part of me would always wish i had a legit LC and not an approximation.
Biggest difference between the Lc/LX and the sequoia is the solid rear axle, which is what legit offroaders want.

They look sweet but the price tag is absurd for a Toyota SUV.

All car prices are absurd now.

A 1992 Volkswagen Golf GTI with 56,000 miles just sold for $87,000. LMAO

This must be that "recession" everyone is panicking about

average driver definitely isn't using 4x4 low w/ locked differential though

I personally enjoy having 4x4 with lockers and think it makes for a more badass vehicle and overall piece of machinery/engineering, but it makes sense why Toyota would get rid of it for casual buyers who don't know anything offroading (which I imagine is not the demograph of Seqouia buyers)

But the average driver certainly does use the ability to switch between 2wd, 4H (essentially all wheel drive), and 4x4. 4H serves much the same function that 4Auto does, and why every other major manufacturer uses it on their full size body on frame RWD trucks and SUV’s. That along with the cargo room are what makes them so versatile and capable. Which is why both are such a massive loss for the 3rd Gen Sequoias.
