Boss and I have been talking about getting me to the next level and doing those development plans for the past few months. Promotion cycle is coming up and I want to remind my boss of our talks end of last year of promoting me so that he doesn’t forget. How do I make it not awkward?

This should be more of an ongoing conversation, you don't want him to feel like it was sprung on him.
Google some ramit sethi videos on this topic he will explain it much better.
But the gist is you want to focus on what you're accomplishing and the extra you're doing to earn the promotion.
Hopefully in your initial conversation you had set some goals / metrics / responsibilities you're tracking towards. From there it's easy - "i've been working really hard on xyz and want to touch base and make sure im meeting (previously discussed metrics) and am on track for promotion"
If you focus on what you're providing and what else you can do first, it won't be too awkward.

Do you have Slack or some other form of work communication? Email?
Send him a calendar invite for a meeting and then hit him up on Slack/text/whatever. "Hey Mr Noseburg it's Cornetto1. I had some exciting things I wanted to share with you. I shot you a calendar invite for a quick chat. If that time doesn't work let me know what time does. Thanks boss!"The character "Big Deeps" is an online persona.
