it's simple really - civilizations will naturally form around bodies of water for survival related reasons. Rivers and river valleys are also useful for growing crops. Occasionally rivers will flood and every once in a while it will be a catastrophic flood. It's not surprising that every ancient culture will have flood cataclysm stories in their history.
As far as Noah's Ark as the story in Genesis tells it - not possible for so many reasons:
- wooden vessels that large are not sea worthy and sink
- the number of animals needed to produce the current diversity visible today in just a few thousand years would exceed the capacity of the ark
- the food / water / waste removal needs of even just the top 20 largest land animals would not be possible
- fresh water fish would have all died in a true global flood of sea waters as would have plant life
- there are bristlecone pines that are older than when the flood is supposed to have happened
- certain animals like kangaroos are only found in Australia and there is no natural land bridge, so how did they get from Australia to Mesopotamia and then back to Australia?
so many more reasons, but those are the ones that come to mind from the top of my head.
