If we actually get snow on Christmas, then I'll count this as a net positive.
Brah they don't build for it here. Pipes aren't insulated and freeze. Homes done have fireplaces. The windows and insulation aren't rated for it. List goes on. I lived in Michigan. The temp isn't a big deal except the part where none of the infrastructure or homes can manage it here.480s / 370b / 495d / 235 x 2 SOHP

Aware.
I've got to "winterize" before Thursday. Detach the water hoses and cover the hose bibs. Bring in or cover some plants.
And try to make at least this one window behind my couch less drafty. I picked up some weather stripping stuff earlier in the season and have calk. May hang a clear shower curtain over it again.
OP: Water! If you haven't had a lot of rain recently then that is one of the main ways to avoid losing your lawn and foundation plants- a dry freeze is the worst.
Grew up here and still remember the cool ice sculpture in front of a neighbor's house that had their old school whirly water sprinkler going on their lawn when a freeze hit. No idea how their pipes fared.INTP Crew

After the week of power loss last year when all the moronic selfish A-holes in the state cranked their heat up during the night when they were literally told it could/would result in power outages - I am not holding my breath that we won't chit all over the grid again this year.
Yes mad - was up that night watching the weather/news because I fukking knew it was going to happen, and had the temp in the house set down to 58 trying to do my part. So went into that cold AF week without even starting off warm like all the fukking kents that had been blasting their heat up to and above 72 degrees.
Any Texas brahs/brahettes in this thread: I swear to baby Jesus if you don't turn your chit down low this weekend overnight I will find you all and make you eat yellow snow.
Cliffs:
TX brahs/brahettes spread the word to everyone to actually turn your fukking heat down and bundle up at night this coming weekend. A few chilly nights bundled up will be much nicer than a week of darkness, no power, no clean water, etc.MISC Haxball Crew

There are "no freeze" exterior water hose spouts you can buy and install on your house. They are designed to not freeze up, and they won't as long as you don't have a hose attached to it.
Bite the bullet and pay a plumber tradie about $100 a throw to get your exterior water spouts replaced to the no freeze ones. All I do is unconnect the spout, turn the water off from the inside, and I'm good for the winter. And that's in winters 10x worse than what you're probably used to.

Did 25 years in lake effect snow region of MI - moved to TX because I got tired of winter.
I'll call anybody in TX who cranked their heat last year a fukking kent azzhole to their face.
And I'll call anybody else a cuck if I feel like it. I usually don't though because it's a stupid fukking meme-insult.MISC Haxball Crew

Went to Austin for work few months back, was super ghetto. At least from the 20 min ride from the airport to downtown I thought I had arrived in in some 3rd world country. The downtown edge was still pretty ghetto with homeless all over, once you got in the middle it was fine with some nice areas.
You could probably find some trash to pile up and sleep under for warmth if you can fight off the hobos

Do you realize how hilarious it sounds to someone who has spent an entire lifetime in MN hearing people in Texas bitch about the cold? I'm aware of the circumstances there, but still, lmao. That's what they get for implementing Green New Deal style bs while having water piping in unfinished attics and chit.

JFC its not even going to be raining/snowing so it is just going to be cold it is not going to be a "freeze"
its going to be sunny all 4 days, its just the first real cold time of the year for Texas and its news to people who like to talk about the weather. that is about it.**worthless college major crew**

They will freeze if you leave a hose connected to them. They won't freeze if you disconnect hoses before freezing occurs. The interior piping needing to be within the actual structure itself is no different than a regular piping fixture in terms of how much space it'll take up inside once installed. Any plumber who knows their asss from their elbow can figure it out and swap them out with the old ones in like 15 - 20 minutes.

don't know about new construction but pretty much all suburban houses near cities in TX have NG. but it was a gas shortage that caused the power outages as all new powerplants are gas turbines, and a lot of the old reliable coal powerplants got converted to gas fired boilers. stupid chit really.
A bullet proof power grid has to have a good amount of coal, it is far and above the most reliable in even the most extreme conditions.
