Anything later and you are quickly approaching the age of viability… seems like bad practice to kill babies that could otherwise survive?

I think we're stuck at the reactionary phase. From a voter's perspective, the issue with the 16 week national ban is that it limits abortion but does it provide any protection for abortion? Meaning if states can still ban all abortions then it just limits it without providing any protection. That could happen some day but it's quite early to say that we'll kick it to the states... except will regulate it first.

A compromise would be if abortions over 16 weeks were banned and under 16 weeks were protected.

I would be fine with banning abortion after 16 weeks except in cases where the mother's life is in danger. This gives people time to decide whether or not abortion is the right choice for themselves.
