I’m happy to have income as it is necessary to function in our society, but employment? No. There are so many other things that could give me purpose.

most people attach themselves to their job, no matter how chitty it is to give themselves a purpose. It's an easy way to create an identity from it.

It's sad if you think about it because you have one life and can literally do anything with it but they'd rather LARP in accounts payable or HR making themselves believe that they are valuable. It's an ego thing.

I'm not getting the updates or something I used to like working back when it was about work but something has changed in the workplaces since the day covid hit and I'm having trouble navigating it. My mind is telling me to opt out but I need something to do and the money srs

BTW i don't hate my job, I just notice something has fundamentally changed and it doesn't even feel like work anymore. Work used to feel like work not a social club where 10% of the employees are doing all the work.

I feel relief driving 65 miles to work, takes about 1.5 hours. I feel relief being at work for 9 hours. I feel relief driving home for the first hour or so. About 15 minutes from home, I get the "Oh crap, I have a wife and kids" feeling.

Many people say this, but what’s mind blowing is how many would actually choose to still work. I always hear boomers say “if I retired I would have nothing to do.” So they work until death.

I don’t understand this mentality at all. If I didn’t have work, I wouldn’t be able to fill the hours with the amount of hobbies I would pick up. Reading books, writing music, learning new languages, traveling extensively, urban exploration, photography, starting a YouTube channel, hiking, long distance bike riding, MMA/boxing training, carpentry projects, 3D printing and brewing are just a few ideas that come to mind which I would enjoy committing to. I could fill 5 lifetimes with my interests.

When people claim they can’t retire because they’d be bored, I can’t help but lol. It’s just cope from having your spirit crushed over 40 years of working.

unfortunately it is what it is, but you can create buffers:

- hate your job? while grinding it out, get experience and keep applying for better positions (long term goal and unfortunately you gotta bear it till you can get out)

- reduce your commute time (This is a big must) or get WFH role

- be somewhat proactive in adding extra skills so you can land aforementioned better positions

- stop working out 5 days a week, keep gym to 3-4 days (i keep weekends and a couple of days in the week, or sometimes ill just do cardio/basic lifting in my garage for the mid week workout), and keep it 1 hr to 1hr 30 tops per session

- once you're able to reduce commute and dedication to the gym, YOU NEED TO ADD IN A SOCIAL HOBBY IN WHICH YOU CONNECT WITH PEOPLE AND WOMEN and aren't a sausage fest.. (this could be cooking, dancing (no homo), or other classes...) BUT you need to make this a regular part of your life otherwise you'll be stuck in the work-home-commute cycle forever

- as cliche as it is, life is what you make it, the system wants you to work till you die and no one is coming to hold your hand and guide you like you were in school or college brother. theres tons of men and women in your spot and they get proactive in hobbies/interests/clubs OUTSIDE of work. otherwise you'll be a zombie walking around in a few years and a shell of your former self.

if you can't find clubs, get your ass out of the country and travel to places that you're curious about seeing and you'll notice that theres a different reality out there than the north american live to work fast consumerist lifestyle void of authenticity


and another thing, leave the judgmental misc mentality behind and try to become like when you were a kid again, don't knock on hobbies or interests until you try them and when you do keep an open mind. you'll be surprised at the amount of amazing chit out there..... (and yes this will be a difficult journey, im on it right now and can suck at times while also being lonely.. but thats the life of a man in this age)
