Electric vehicles are exploding from water damage after Hurricane Ian, top Florida official warns

A top Florida state official warned Thursday that firefighters have battled a number of fires caused by electric vehicle (EV) batteries waterlogged from Hurricane Ian.

EV batteries that have been waterlogged in the wake of the hurricane are at risk of corrosion, which could lead to unexpected fires, according to Jimmy Patronis, the state's top financial officer and fire marshal.

"There’s a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start," Patronis tweeted Thursday. "That’s a new challenge that our firefighters haven’t faced before. At least on this kind of scale."

Seems like Big Oil put out this article. Gasoline cars catch on fire all the time. They literally use fire to run the vehicle.

All these water logged/damage cars/gas ones included, are slowly going to be shipped across the country, feel sorry for the poor sap in MI who 6 months from now buys a used car thinking he got a great deal.

    Lefty stupidity in full display.
You continue to be a posterboy for leftist phagg0try.

Maybe research the difference gas and EV fires, and why firefighters are having trouble putting out EV car fires and are basically left with no choice but to let them burn.

Honest take as usual. Regular cars can get waterlogged from a hurricane and they don’t explode…that was the comparison you were looking for

Interesting hybrids are way worse than both compounding factor of two different types of power.

TBH I do like EVs I would prefer for another good leap forward in battery tech to come out before investing though.

And I do think EV battery fires are horrible and do happen too often. We also need to figure out how to re-use batteries, can't just always chuck them in a landfill. I just think this story is stupid and clickbait that clickbaited good ol' NK.

But you're right, it is interesting about hybrids.

Right there are different components quantity, intensity, and timing. EV fires are WAY worse than gas fires even if they happen less often. Also, don't gas fires usually only happen while running, EV fires can start while sitting idle. Come home to your house burned down because your car caught fire in your garage type of situation.

In fact, as can be seen, per 100,000 vehicle sales only 25.1 on average experience a fire, and only 52 electric car fires have been recorded.

Hybrid vehicles, however, are much more likely to experience a fire, with an average of 3,474.5 vehicle fires per 100,000 hybrids sold. In the middle, though still dramatically higher than electric vehicles, ICE-based vehicles suffer from 1,529.9 fires per 100,000 sales.
Gas cars 60x more likely to catch fire than EVs.

As always, conservatism requires existing in diametric opposition to observable reality.

The EV thing is a giant scam to suck you into buying something that is unneeded.

    - vid of one car where it's clearly not the Li battery pack that's on fire
    - car weighs 2+ tons so technically tons of electric cars have been disabled
    - some claim about EVs randomly exploding because that's how things work

Thank you Fox News, very cool.

It's the 12V battery packs that corrode in salt water and can combust, just like in ICE cars. But your car is totaled anyway after a salt water shower.

They are in fully sealed weather-/waterproof housings with extra protection between them and the passenger compartment.

then how is the car being submerged in salt water exploding or catching fire?
it shouldn't happen if they are sealed.

For real. I use my Model S for boating and go through batteries constantly.

z4: "MMA match works, too. So when are you available this month?

Deep: "I won't subject myself to being in the presence of a scumbag."

If you were actually able to interpret the content in the links you keep posting, gas vehicles don't actually catch fire because of the gas engine.

It isn't, there's only a single video of a Tesla releasing some smoke but it's very clearly not the main sealed battery pack since that would burn with an absolutely massive fire that would be pretty fuking hard to put out.

Cars in general have a boatload of electronics and said 12Vs that would light up after being dowsed in salt water for days, regardless of being ICE, EV or hybrid. EV battery pack housings would have to be punctured and bathed in salt water for quite some time before going up in flames. No EV is going to randomly combust after getting sprinkled with some salt water.
