Although it is considered damn near blasphemous in boxing circles, I strongly believe a prime Mike Tyson would defeat a prime Muhammad Ali. Would it be easy? Certainly not, but I still think the power, explosiveness, inside fighting skills, peek a boo elusiveness and impeccable footwork would be enough to overcome Ali’s superior 80” reach, speed, slipperiness and stamina. Tyson would pressure Ali from round one and cut the ring off, neutralizing his rope a dope. Ali would have some success in jabbing Tyson from the distance and tying him up, however I ultimately think Tyson would have no trouble getting within range to work the body and throw those sneaky combinations, getting the job done somewhere around the 8th round.

That said, the window of opportunity for Tyson would be short. Not only in prime years (‘89 Tyson would already lose to a ‘72 Ali IMO) but also in rounds. If things go past the 10th, I could see Mike’s periodic stamina issues taking hold and Ali winning a close but decisive decision.

I would say prime for prime, Tyson beats Ali 7 times out of 10.

Outside of their primes, Ali takes it 9 times out of 10.

I think prime Tyson and Marciano both would beat Ali. But I feel Foreman would beat Tyson and Marciano yet lost to Ali. It’s often about how the styles tend to match up with each other, swarmers like Tyson and Marciano did well against outside fighters, but swarmers often have a hard time with brawlers.
