I heard that Anderson Silva used to play soccer and even Conor McGregor at one point was really into it.
Is there something to what soccer teaches you which transitions well into MMA?

Not especially, soccer is the most popular sport for kids growing up in those countries, so naturally fighters from those countries would likely have participated when younger.
Also look at the skills required, and the nature of the game. Soccer has no real upper body involvement, relatively light on contact / aggression, and I wont even pick the low hanging fruit of flopping.
Sports that have much more carryover would be rugby / American football / hockey.

I would have figured. LOL @ people saying American football when most football players are grossly out of shape and can barely endure after running 50 yards, often having to slow down. Then again, fools think brute strength = GOAT when Roger Huerta is pummeling former linebackers in street fights. Just look at how long Greg Hardy lasted in the UFC and he was a top notch player in the NFL lol.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned that I think might be playing a role here is balance. Silva and McGregor seem to have outstanding balance.

There are no clock stoppages in soccer and they are obsessed about keeping the game going, so it's easy to cheat and to get away with it because refs are under pressure to resume the game as quickly as possible. As a result, a lot of mistakes and you can fk the opposite team over if they get a red card and lose a player after you pretend like they almost killed you.
It was an absolute sh*tshow just a few years ago when using video replays was considered to be a taboo in soccer. Fortunately they finally upgraded to 21st century and now allow refs to check some video replays once in a while, so soccer players can't fuk around as much as they used to.
