It's hard to go wrong with KAC. I have a 16" gun but I've decided it's not a happy medium so I'm going with a 11.5" and 18" upper.

So you’re buying the 11.5” and then another 18” to swap/interchange?

You don’t like 16” in general or the KAC SR-15?

I have the lower end of the spectrum (10.5-11.5) covered there…anything more than 16” is getting too long to maneuver (especially with a can)

The 16" SR-15 is great but I have trouble at 600yd. It could be the optic maxing out at 8x, or the slow federal ammo, or more likely just me. I'm getting the new SC Irregulars/Noveske 11.5" gun and a PRI 18" Mod 0 upper for it.

Damn throwing it out to 600 is an accomplishment in itself for 556. If you are hitting well at even/up to 500 I’d call that pretty good.

hey really dumb question here, but I see a lot of conflicting info about it but how much food do you put in your 72 hour pack?

IMO why not just do something like protein powders/green powders/gatorade/etc if it's really for a bug out. I could see using mres but that's a lot of MREs and a lot of volume/ some weight. I could see using freeze dried food as well...maybe some emergency food bars.

Your sustainment bag comment got me going on what you should put in there. It's obvious they're meant for MREs, but not enough for 3 days.

yeah and a lot of online advise says to use a water filter in your water Blatter or cup. That's not feasible in dry areas or places with biologically contaminated water AFAIK. So that is my next question lmao.

For instance, I would shudder to drink water from swamps in Florida lmao.

All my camping and go bags have sterilization tablets and life-straws in them. Can't go wrong preparing for both scenarios lol.

Life straws are just not good if you need a large quantity of water for say cooking a meal but it will turn that swamp water into Fiji water real quick.

Have you ever tried an all protein shake diet. You feel like death. They are supplements to “supplement”. They don’t replace real food even if it’s MRE or freeze dried it’s still better

did not try to imply otherwise, trying to imply that you can get macros directly without an MRE, per se

Peanut butter makes a lot of sense. It also comes powdered if you want to save weight. If all your food comes powdered, you can either fit more of it or pack less weight. Maybe it's not practical, but gatorade powder is basically dextrose, protein powder is protein, and powdered peanut butter is fat. Greens powder could be for nutrients/vitamins/some fiber. Powdered milk could work as well. I guess, if you trust that you'd have a water source or a way to procure water, no reason not to pack mostly dry foods.

I hate the feeling you get when you have a lop-sided diet, so I am definitely trying to avoid that in an emergency situation. I could see how MREs break up the monotony of survival food.

I've looked into DIY MRE packing before and it's quite involved, but possible. The only issue is the weight/volume of something that isn't dehydrated. Dehydration is such a huge advantage that it's hard to ignore. But it sucks to be 100% dependent on an assumed water source. I wonder if anyone sells chemical heaters...

3 days of peanut butter does not weigh that much that I would risk not having reliable water source. You'd also have to purify the water first.

The question you should ask is 72 hours of what? Just being able to make it 72 hours? If your goal is to be alive at the end of 72 hours it doesn't take much. If you're actually doing something interesting, 25 lbs is not realistic because survival gear, food and water to operate at a high level of work plus layers will be probably 35 lb, plus mission essential gear, so another 10-50 lb depending on what you're doing.

I assume 10 miles of hiking each day, or at least the caloric equivalent. The pack does not include any additional gear for any self defense equipment like a gun/ammo or anything. This is just a base pack that would contain items common to any activity.

However, hurricane survival is a real threat if we're hit with a direct storm. At that point, no water is potable and I'd need everything in the bag to be waterproof. I am trying to keep it light so we can have more than one bag and a SO can carry one as well.

but seriously if I could just load up on ritz/peanut butter/non-perishable cheese spread that would be fantastic lmao.

Here's what I'm going to go with:

3 tubes of ritz (2400 cals)
jar of peanut butter (3k cals)
    cheese spread (???)
3 freeze dried dinners (1.5k cals)
3 freeze dried breakfasts (1.5k cals)
    3 scoops of gatorade
3 scoops protein powder 100g lol
    3 scoops greens

Yeah that's a lot of calories in a small amount of weight/space. That could fit in a sustainment pouch.

this is a good overview of calories vs weight of freeze dried foods:

I assumed powdered pb was just dehydrated, so you'd have to carry or find the weight savings in water. But looks like they press the oils out, which is probs the most calorie dense part. 1 lb real pb has -2500 cals vs. -2000 cals for powdered.

I'd guess you could get close to 25 lb with your climate not being super cold. Was watching a vid basically about this a few weeks ago and he had everything divided up in dry bags. Something to consider, and also having a change of warm (dry) clothes. Doesn't have to be cold cold to get hypothermia if you're wet.

yep powdered pb is nonsense for this. I assume dry bags is a must and ive always used dittys for organizing camping in fl and know it works well.

I might just go eat some cheese crackers in the woods this weekend lmao.

Braces are legal again, so whatever pistol configurations that were legal before should be legal now.

In fact, OAL cannot exceed 26 inches for a pistol so good luck doing that without going smaller than 16" barrel.
