Depends on your budget.
If you're limited on funds then a M&P is a fine rifle.
If money is no option pick from Noveske, Geissele, BCM or Daniel Defense and you'll have a very high quality rifle.
I have a DD MK-18 as my primary defense weapon and I love it.6'1 - 240lbs

For the money they are a great rifle. I've got a ~10 year old bare bones m&p with a cheap Nikon 3×9 that still coldbore grouped a penny at 100 yards a few weeks ago after banging around in a truck/atv for several years since the last time it was sighted in.

Ruger AR-556 makes a great beginner platform. If you just want the basics to check the AR block for home defense and plinking, you'd be hard pressed to find a better rifle.
