I'm hearing more and more hype for CRT televisions for retrogaming and I just don't get it
I even brought 2 small CRT's to the recycling park recently because they were in the way lmfao
I can understand the issue of not being able to hook up OG hardware
my "old" HD TV had SCART (SNES, N64), VGA (Dreamcast) and Component (GameCube, yes I have those Japanese ones that are crazy expensive now) ports so I could basically hook up everything I wanted directly
now I have a 4K HD TV that only has HDMI ports unfortunately but even then there are solutions on the market to hook up OG hardware through HDMI
I have to admit I don't like the really big screen TV's, my old one was 32 inch and my new one is 43 inch
to me it's not worth the hassle of CRT sets, it looks good enough for me on modern televisions, especially the 8 and 16 bit ones look simply FLAWLESS now
what do you brahs think?
to me the CRT craze is some hipster chit, just get a moderately sized HD TV lmfao

Technically retro games do look better on CRTs, since the aspect ratio and output is a more close technological match. That being said, people need to just come to grips with the fact that Retrogames are not graphical masterpieces anyway so for me, personally, the hassle of keeping a CRT around and in good condition is not worth it. My LG and Samsung TVs both do a fine job of outputting older games (when compared to the emulated versions) so it's not a necessity.
It's more of a "purist" stance I've seen than a necessity.***Mariah Carey is my 10/10 Crew***

I have a 75” 4K hdtv in the living room
I have 3 other hdtvs throughout the house from 43”-55”
I used an hdmi converter until I finally was able to score a good crt set (i games the retro systems on a 43” LG up until then btw). And ya long story short it was smoother not all pixelated retarded looking. It looks better on a crt since we know the old systems were created with that technology in mind. Unless you have a retro scaler which runs you $125 minimum then yeah you need a crt to get the best out of them on and hdmi tv. I bought the cheap hdmi converter cable and the games still looked like ass to me. Finally got me a good crt 20” and I play them like they looked when I was growing up.BLM (Brock Lesnar Matters)

Eh it depends really. I grew up with CRT's like all 90's kids, and one of the biggest problems I got with them is how big and heavy they tend to be. This means that you would probably only want to get a small one for gaming, which kinda defeats the purpose of having a better screen in many ways. Right now I just got a couple of old small CRT's in the garage, and the only time I would probably hook one up is if I'm in the mood for some lightgun games. Now a days you can get enhancements for older consoles that makes them look better, like the HDMI adapter I got for my Gamecube and N64. Set everything up right and it's hard to complain.

should have rephrased my question I think
I'm talking about using/getting/hooking up a CRT set today in 2022 for retrogaming
of course a CRT is the best, but if you add all the disadvantages it brings to the equation are you still on team CRT?
the convenience from modern TV's far outway the benefits of CRT's to me
that maybe wasn't clear from the OP+++ miscin' at work crew +++

just seems like a hassle and not worth it to me anymore tbh
I used to be big on OG hardware but I fully embraced emulation to the point where I rather play the games I own on my RaspberryPi or Odroid lol
still enjoy collecting here and there but it's only a couple of games a year nowadays+++ miscin' at work crew +++

Its cool if you have the space and time for it.
I had intended to combine a CRT display with emulation and play emulators on a CRT. But I didnt want to dedicate that much space to it. So I got a 13" Sony CRT but the HDMI to composite adapter i bought dont do 480i so now it just sits there...
You kind of have to go all in to it or I wouldnt bother. All the top emulators have a filters that can mimic CRT anyways. Its not perfect but it will get the game looking close to what its supposed to be. Agree that super pixelated crap on LCD looks terrible without some type of filter, either super scaling or scalines. Those been around forever

HDTV or HD monitor for practicality reasons. And like eterrible987 said above, emulators can run CRT filters that are going to be good enough considering the amount of space you'll save, plus being able to use that screen for regular HD gaming when you're not playing retro titles.
I was looking for a screenshot online to give an example and stumbled across this blog that gives some good image comparisons with a slider.
Once you get into the 3D era like N64 games, you might as well just go full emulator HD since the higher resolution means you retain the same visual style but without the aliasing.

go to ******** market place or offerup and buy yourself an old tube style TV where its native resolution basically matches the resolution on those older retro consoles.. do it cause they are going to get more popular and higher priced.
the big appeal is, lets say a 240p console or a 480p console plays on those TVs with that matching native resolution its going to look GREAT.
you know how good those games looked, but you try to play a 240p game upscaled to 1080p and even 4k and it looks like crap and you say the game didn't age well, but truth is you are playing it wrong.*** Free Thinker Crew ***

I got rid of my 2 old CRT's since I didn't use them anymore
maybe it's just me but I play retrogames on my 4K TV and I think they look good (srs)
I know what's happening and realise it's just the way it is and I'm fine with it, doesn't stop me from enjoying the games
in addition I also think 1080p movies look great and mp3 files (192 to 320kbps) sound perfect, yet you have purists screaming those are awful
maybe I'm just not that demanding lol+++ miscin' at work crew +++

brah, needing a seperate set for retroconsoles is a disadvantage on it's own but in this case it gets even worse lol
it's a big ass, heavy ass technology from the past that you have to maintain, if it breaks you can't go to any store to pick up a new one
you can't even use a modern TV stand to place that HUGE ugly box on
compared to using a modern set where you can just switch between Halo Infinite and Comix Zone with the press of a button+++ miscin' at work crew +++

Hmm my CTR is much lighter than my 55' Full HD TV. I can carry it alone but my HD TV I need two people to move around.
I don't maintain my CTR, it is 24 years old and is still working. My brothers one is 20 years old and still working too.
It only takes like 1 m² space, while my HD TV takes much more space.
