I have an 108 inch 1/4 wave antenna on my truck and never hear anybody at all unless there is skip. The range for CB is crap likely 7 miles or so at best. Truckers mostly switched to cell phone apps to talk. If there ever is another event like september 2017 trying to escape florida I could see using it. I almost ran out of gas trying to get out of here and people were acting insane. There was no gas for the full week before the storm in the entire state because idiots were hoarding gas filling up 5 gallon buckets and killing each other over plywood pieces in the home depot parking lots.

Can confirm truckers don’t even use CB radios anymore. Some of our company trucks have them but I never heard of anyone using one.

This is true and one of the reasons I've never bothered getting a ham licence. CB has always been good enough. I was averaging a 50 mile range with the 5/8 and could have done better with the beam antenna. Handheld I use and old Lafeyette Dynacom 5 and it gets out about 10 miles.

CB is 40 channels in the 27 mhz band. FRS in 462 - 467 mhz UHF band.
Ham (Amateur radio) refers to amateur radio bands alloted by the FCC for Amateur radio communication anywhere from longwave to UHF.

CB is dead unless you know someone you want to talk to and they actually have a CB or have another radio as a base or mobile station. If you don't have this odds of finding someone to talk to these days are slim to none. I still use it for short range because cell reception in the bush sucks, but I own all the radios and know there will be someone on the other end. In my area nobody has CB in their car or base station antennas at home anymore. The handhelds made in the last 30 years with the small rubber antennas struggle to cover more than a few miles. FRS is far more active there days. I have got about a 5 mile range with it between two handhelds.

Technically using a HAM device which uses higher tx power for FRS channels is illegal. But no one will know. And yeah you can program them in.
