help me figure out a puzzle

So last night we went to the gf's aunts 90th birthday party and her daughter teased us with a surprise later. So we all eat dinner and this video begins playing of this 90 year old woman's wedding and major life events at ages 20 and beyond with a smooth, colorized video of people in the room ice skating, first communion, home buying, parties and weddings. I am completely blown away by the quality, the ages of many of the 80 year olds in the video currently in the room watching themselves, and this becomes the focus of the party. I joke that there must be a time traveler using a cell phone, recording the videos, because who had a cell phone in the 50's and 60's
So my question to you all is what type of consumer recording devices were available back then to have such amazing videos now in 2022?

I did a simple search and did not find much until the RCA huge video recorders in 1976.

8mm film. They can be digitally restored to make the quality better.

I've seen pretty good quality filming done in the 40's or so by more well off families travelling the world etc, so there has been some sort of way for some to document more like us. I don't know about the tech/film used either, but I've watched a bunch of great restoration on some youtube channels of older (1900-1920's) films, using modern AI etc and the result can be stunning.

I was about to start trying to do something similar with local historical pictures in an editing program. Pics of ppl and school photos from a hundred years ago. Some AI functions let you resize and scale up the size in a more effective way than before and ofc just add small regular touches as well.

I just goofed around with this school pic from the 30's and did 2-3 things, no resize. Am a beginner though - hoping to learn more as go along.

Thanks guys lol, i was going to use my time traveler theory but it seemed a bit wacky, so i decided to ask the pros here that know way more than me.
I asked the daughter and she said that she had boxes of stuff but she never knew what was used and who was recording; it seemed like a fair question because the room was blown away( 100 people)

I was frankly jealous because when i came around, we had the RCA vhs huge devices and no one could afford one.
No home movies just picture albums.....
My grandmother did all of our family memories and no one had what they had last night.

    was it this thing?

In a quick nut shell, the problem wasn't with the film footage, it was the way it was viewed....8 mm film/slides were thrown into a CHEAP projector with a HORRIBLE lens and then blown up on a 1 dimensional silver or white screen 6 to 8 foot square

Video tapes from 70's/80's were viewing on tube TV with a 240 to maybe a 360 line resolution at best

Also once any footage is "Digitized"...wether it be photos/film/video....the sky is the limit as to improve the quality.
Then with modern day viewing devices...4K...8K viewing makes all the footage look marvelous.....

I found an original glass negative from 1877 of my great great Grandfather and digitized it....not bad huh.....lol

    Very very, cool Bosko!
I wish we all could watch old family videos, it was quite an experience seeing parents as kids and grandparents in motion.
It is hard to explain but it was an unbelievable experience for many in the room watching.
    Thanks guys for the explanations.

Guy on the right has a badass mustache. These old pictures are always interesting to me -- even just walking around the streets everyone used to wear hats and dress pretty well. Nobody ever smiled in pictures either...which always made me wonder whether it reflected their austere lifestyle or just social convention. Either way, they always seem to have a quiet dignity that we don't see too often on today's social media.

The lack of smiling reflects how people were used to media being captured. Posing for portraits took hours so holding a smile wasn't feasible, which is why you rarely see anything approaching it on canvas. Early photographs weren't too much different - the first photos took about 20 minutes to capture, and if you didn't hold still it wouldn't come out well. Even as technology advanced and the capture time dropped to 10-20 seconds, behaviour was set. It wasn't until motion pictures (1920s-1930s) that it became common for people to witness a fuller range of expression in recorded media, and so smiling in photos became much more popular.
