Diaz and Chimaev are the main event at UFC 279 -- where they're fighting at welterweight (170 pounds) -- but when it came time for the 28-year-old undefeated fighter to get on the scale, he clocked in at 178.5 pounds.

It didn't seem like Khamzat was upset or remorseful, either ... he flipped the middle finger up as he was about to step off the scale.

FYI, during non-title fights, the UFC allows fighters to be one pound overweight ... meaning Khamzat could've made weight weighing 171 pounds. But, he wasn't even close.

In fact, 178.5 pounds puts Chimaev closer to the Middleweight division (185 pounds) ... where he has also previously fought.

Nate weighed in at 171 pounds.

Now, the question is, what happens to the fight?? There's a chance the bout could be scrapped ... or, Khamzat will be forced to give up a healthy chunk of his fight check to Diaz.

Totally agree, I guess Chimaev was involved in a brawl back stage during the press conference on Thursday as well.



UFC president Dana White cancels press conference after backstage brawl



UFC president Dana White cancelled a press conference on Thursday promoting UFC 279 in Las Vegas just before it was about to start after a brawl broke out between fighters backstage.


White was booed by fans when he announced the press conference would not happen.

"It was ... crazy, I don't even know what to call it ... Twenty-two years, however long I've been doing this, we've never had an incident like today," White told reporters afterward. "All hell broke loose out. We stopped it but we didn't do a good job of not letting it happen. I don't know what went on here. It's never happened before and we'll be ready for it the next time."

Sports Illustrated reported that UFC 279 headliner Khamzat Chimaev and fellow main-card fighter Kevin Holland were the initial brawlers.

"It wasn't just one thing that erupted and happened. There were multiple things going on at the same time. ... Once it all just started erupting, it was a complete s---show."

White said the plan is for UFC 279 to go on as planned on Saturday.

Chimaev is slated to fight Nate Diaz.

"Everything will still happen. It is what it is," White said.

Agree. Was happy at first that someone coming out of a gym over here was doing well, but in general dislike fighters acting like children....and missing by this much while running around with a posse, and trash talking all over the place is just lame. I think that fighters who miss by this much, like him and costa, should be forced up a division. They are just wasting everyones time and money...

Edit: Saw Chimaev's coach in a clip explaning what happened and laughing about it....very professional. He should be pissed off.

I would have said Diaz with a miracle victory, after sustaining a beatdown. He can take a lot of abuse. However, 7.5 lbs is a big weight advantage when it comes to pro fighters...

Chimaev will win but his wife's purse should go to Diaz.

UFC 279 will look different than initially planned after Khamzat Chimaev missed weight by 7.5 pounds on Friday morning.

Chimaev was initially supposed to headline the UFC 279 card on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in a welterweight bout with Nate Diaz. While Diaz weighed in at 171 pounds Chimaev missed weight significantly.


So instead, Diaz will fight Tony Ferguson in the co-main event on Saturday night. The fight will mark the last on Diaz’s current UFC contract.

Ferguson was supposed to square off against Li Jingliang on the card on Saturday, and both of those fighters weighed in at 170.5 on Friday.

With that fight set, UFC is working to finalize two other bouts to round out the card. Chimaev is reportedly going to fight Kevin Holland instead — a bout that is sure to be heated after their altercation earlier this week that resulted in a canceled news conference. Holland was going to fight Daniel Rodriguez on the card initially.

Rodriguez and Jingliang are reportedly in talks for a fight to round out the card, too. The fights, however, have yet to be confirmed.

Don't know what is going on now, but one article wrote: "Dustin Poirier is willing to step in on short notice to fight Nate Diaz in UFC 279’s main event, but the promotion hasn’t called “Diamond” back." I'd like to see that and guess I would bet on Diaz if it happened.

Not that I like him that much, but gotta respect what a difficult job Dana has with these unpredictable ppl.

Fighters missing weight, especially like that are punished. One way or another, no matter who they are, they are punished. Should be because the ticket is worth less now.

Had the right picks this time but didn't dare gamble since I'm wrong so often. Chimaev got it done, but seemed a bit wreckless and almost thought he would gas himself out there for a bit. Don't know if he is smart/wise enough to go all the way yet. Post interview in the ring was cringe.

Nate and Ferguson both looked old and just weird but glad Nate got this sendoff instead of getting humiliated by Chimaev.

He had 1 job, make weight, I lose respect for fighters that can't make weight. Up to a pound I can sort of see, the amount he was over just shows his arrogance.
