    GLUT4 Activation Duration

    Hi all!

Does anyone know how long GLUT4 stays activated for enhanced glucose uptake after resistance training? The literature indicates it quickly deactivates, but I haven't found a good timeline... Thanks!

At a guess I would say that it depends on the level of glucose in cells and in the blood stream. In other words, it depends on how much was burned during exercise and how much is available to replace it. The time taken is just a consequence of however much rebalancing needs to be done rather than some fixed quantity.

Thanks for the reply! I'm trying to figure out how long after a workout I can wait to consume a high-carb meal and take advantage of the GLUT4 benefits... Is there a general guideline on that or is it essentially immediately after the workout or the benefit is gone?

Given that a typical workout probably only burns maybe 100 - 200 calories over and above what you'd normally be doing , I suspect there is no reason to use any kind of special post workout protocol. This assumes you are well fed as with mass gain goals. If you exercised fasted, getting some kind of food in as soon as practical might be better than waiting but it's very hard to quantify. Usually this kind of micromanagement is shown to be a waste of time when we actually have data for these kinds of scenarios being studied in a controlled environment.

This is more to do with protein but is related:

This isn't for contest prep. It's for my general workout/nutritional regimen.
