When the mustache starts to grow long enough to cover the lips am I suppose to trim it or let this grow and use a paste/beard wax to part it to the side above the lips?

Try a landing strip.

Get basic grooming scissors and a comb. Cut along the top of the lip line.

That's it. I also use wax to mold it and keep the ends from falling in.

You let grow. You twist the hairs towards the sides of your lips to keep them away and you trim the hairs over the lips to a length usually slightly over the top of the lip. It thickens up over time as more hairs grow in as well.

Or you can trim it along the line where your upper and lower lip meets. So when your mouth is closed, only the lower lip is exposed.

You ain't gonna learn chit from how your barber does it, so you'll just have to go again next time.

If your beard gains aren't maxxing at the moment, you might wanna play with what you have now. Later on when you're beardmaxxing you'll either have the skills, or know it's better to pay for it.

If you just cut the lip line on the moustache, it can get quite bushy looking. You can also use a trimmer with a huge guard to give it a light trim first. So the hairs closer to the nose ain't 2 inches long, then trim with scissors/no guard on lip line.

Trim across just above the lip. Hair down into your mouth looks and feels disgusting.

you can't get the mustace very well with guards because you run into your nose before the hair gets cut.
