I am 71 and Vegan. Any other older guys still lifting

I work out at Gold’s I have plenty of muscle still. I work out 3 to 4 times a week. I don’t use any animal sources for my protein. The best thing about plant sourced lifting is you never have any recovery problems. it isn’t steroids but it makes you feel that you can keep going all the time which benefits you as much as we might from eating some meat-based source. Any other older guys working out still?

I'm 72 years old, workout just about every single day and this coming December marks 50 years since I stopped eating my fellow creatures. There are quite a few people in their 70's in this neck of the woods that workout.

Glad the vegan/training is working for you. We all find our own way
    over the years.

    I’m 74 and still getting 2/3 sessions a week. I’ve tried a half-azzed
vegan diet a few times and did not care for it. For me, it has been
high protein/low(er) carb. Keeps me where I want to be.

As for recovery, if I think I need it, I’ll rest another day.

    I'm 75...

... actually not but didn't want to ruin the trend of the posts. I eat balanced for protein, with seafood, meat & also plant-based stuff in more recent years. Great job guys!

I’ve only been vegan for four years but I was trending that way already down to only chicken. I get my protein from unprocessed sources generally I’m thinking of adding some pea powder in. What do you use, anything like this? other than that I don’t use any other powders. I use soy, beans, rice etc.

I train for overall fitness and strength endurance, not aesthetics. I don't use any powders. I just eat a wide variety diet: lots of beans, some tofu, some nuts, some grains, various non dairy milks and a bucket load of fruits and vegetables.

Sounds like me I just decided though to maybe get some powder because that way I don’t have to use as much beans and rice and soy. A lot of vegetables and I have a salad in the morning on workout days that weighs 2.5-3 pounds ha ha. My salad has up to 25 components in it. I use a balsamic vinegar for dressing.
Vitamins I take B12 D zinc iodine iron vitamin K2 a DHA EPA capsule and a small amount of creatine 3 g to keep my homocystine levels as low as I can. Instead of nuts I usually have flaxseed and Chia seed to build up my omega-3 levels.

Orgain's plant-based protein powders (pea, brown rice, chia) are pretty good, vanilla tastes good blended some fruit + water. The sport version has 30g protein + fruit/veggie/tumeric/ginger.

Thanks for the tip. I use turmeric and pepper to activate it. I know that pea powder with brown rice is good because it does add methionine. I also look for low sodium powders. I try to keep my salt intake to 1500 mg or less.

Yeah, I love big salads! I take a multi, a b-complex and lots of vit-C.

I just checked out your profile and you are well built! What's your weekly workout routine?

Just wanted to say you guys are truly inspiring. I'm 43 and starting to feel/see some of the early signs of aging, but I know if there are guys like you out there I still have a lot of really good years of training to look forward to. Also I have tried vegan for a couple months and I really liked it though it is difficult to stick with when your whole family are meat eaters. I may go back to it at some point. I was raising ducks for awhile just to try to find a humane animal protein source (duck eggs). If you don't have any males they are basically just a duck period. I took good care of my ducks and raised them to live long, healthy lives, but unfortunately due to a change in living situations I had to find a better home for them. I'm sure they are happier now though, as they have a huge pasture to roam around.

that’s great because you can never tell people what to do but you can sure show them a good example of what can be done. A lot of times people will say well I’ve heard this works and that doesn’t work in this and that and then I say well I am the test so I know what works for me and leave it at that. No matter what someone says people see what has been done.

    I'm glad for the ducks.

My entire family and every lady I've ever lived with were meat eaters.

Workout wise, I'm into doing a little bit a lot. That way I can exercise just about every day.

Energy management becomes a bit more important as you get older.

How much protein a day do you guys get?

Gotta say I dont eat much red meat and pork any more, or dairy (steaks are stupid expensive...), maybe 4-5 small servings a week. My protein powder is "VEGA sport" stuff.

    My weakness: carbs...
Please record my time/reps if I pass out

I haven't got a clue, but I don't know how much I weigh or what my measurements are, either. I look pretty good naked, though.

If That’s running too much money check out Anthony’s pea powder on Amazon it’s a good price. servings are really 1/3 dose so you just do three of them so it says 90 servings but really it’s about 30 servings . it’s a great deal at $.50 for each serving. That would give you 24 g of protein per serving fairly low salt about I think 180 mcg for the 30gram serving…Rich

I’ve been trying some pea powder as a supplement and I noticed it’s low in methionine. Rice powder is low in lysine. this is what makes the powders separate not as good as whey but to get the same as a whey profile you can put them together. I bought one of each kind and mixed them. Now the amino acid profile is similar to the whey. That has always been one of the downfalls of using plant-based protein powder. The good thing is the IGF1 factor is bad when it comes from meat and you’re older. It doesn’t seem to make tumors etc grow, only your muscles when it’s from plant-based forms of protein. I can take the extra protein without worrying about the bad effects including kidney issues because it doesn’t seem to cause that either….Rich

    My weakness: carbs...
    100 to 120 g of protein a day.

I got some pea powder and rice powder and mixed them together to make more of a whey profile. That’s the problem with most plant protein powders have lysine and no methionine or methionine and no lysine mixed together though those two were good. Much like beans and rice. I’m trying to take my protein up to about 120 g per day which I think I can do with the supplement. To remain healthy I think yes you can get enough through plant sources but I think i’ll do better through the supplementation for bodybuilding
    This will work well. Rich

i’m now up over 125 g a day of protein. It seems to be working I seem stronger stronger than I’ve been at the gym. My picture up in the box is a current one. It looks bigger than last year which is interesting being 71 almost 72. I Started doing more rack pulls and deadlifts To get some more thickness along with rowing. Does this sound like a good idea for making me thicker in the back. i’ve also gone to more pull ups. We have an assisted pull up machine so I can really do a lot of reps more than I could do that if I would just put on a bar. Machine works on the principle that you can Adjust a pin to give you some assistance or not at all. But long slow repetitions are easier because you could get a full pull on it for as many as you want really stressing the lat. The good thing is I have a Gold’s Gym I train at and it’s an great one. 1.7 miles from my house. Living here in California the weather is always good too so I get there easily.

you’re not getting enough fiber. That’s what makes you constipated not the powder. Try some brown rice or beans. Punch up foods with fiber. Good luck.

There are a lot of things that can cause constipation. Dani Shugart had the same problem with plant-based protein, and she kept eating more and more fiber with no relief. She literally had to start eating meat again for her bowel to start moving properly again.

The only rule that applies to everyone in nutrition is there are no rules.

I hope it’s not some kind of gut biome issue ? A lot of problems there too. Some people when transitioning to a plant based diet have issues with gas bloating etc.

It's the food combinations that's to blame.
