You need alot of striking abilities, try kickboxing, Muay Thai, Tae Kwan Do, or even plain old Boxing. And try to at least understand about groundfighting, know what positions you should be in if the fight goes to the ground, and know how to sweep someone from your guard into your mount. Don't worry about submissions, if you are in the mount just pound their ass they won't know what to do.

NO, the most important thing you need to learn about street fighting is hit first when possible. Secondly, do whatever you must to win (biting clawing gouging) do it all if you must especially if you didn't provoke the fight or are outnumbered.

OK , you gotta do a street fight type of combat !
That means no traditiona lstuff that takes ages to understand and use like tae kwon do , karate , kung fu...
These are goiod but it takes too muc h time to master.
Something like american boxing(full contact) , kick boxing or muay thai is the best , cause it's tough , you will get punched in the face so you'll get used to it , it's not hard to learn and it increases your physical ability by far !

i'd say wrestling. based on the overwhelming success of wrestlers in MMA such as UFC
randy couture was the better wrestler, which is why he tutored tito ortiz.
ortiz was a california state wrestling champ. couture was a 3x national wrestling champ and world team member.
The better wrestler will be able to stay on top and control the man while he "grounds and pounds."
of course you can't beat someone only on wrestling, 'cuz in wrestling there are no submissions or strikes.
but wrestling fundamentals are key. Boxing doesn't do a fighter much good if hes taken to his back, unfortunately. Basic striking skills and sound wrestling technique is key.9/2005

yes wing chun is a type of kung fu, but it isnt a mindless classical form that makes you strike the pose of a butterfly just to kick someone, so its an exception.I'm hungry

To the original question: Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Muai Thai will teach you excellent overall fighting tehnique with hands feet AND knees. BJJ has more focus on guard and overall defense then any other ground art. Add a simple mount to ground and pound (illegal in BJJ) and you will be a near complete street fighter.

Martial arts is so much conditioning. I took Muay thai for 2 years and we spent more time conditioning then doing fight techniques. I had the best instructor he taught me for free he was my best friend he was in his 50's he passed away in 2001. I was with him on tuesday and he died on thursday. He taught me alot he trained in thailand for along time he knew his ****. He was a not a big guy about my size he weighed about 165 lifted weights but knew how to whoop ass. After he has died it has been really hard for me to get back into it. But I have 2 friends that are really into and know many different styles so I have started up again.
I like pink tacos how about YOU :)
bodyweight 170
bench 285
deadlift 330
miltary 160 actually havent max yet
I fight because I know this world is cold, cold place I've been let down stepped on, passed up,and F' D over I fight because I know that in this world, the one perosn you can rely on is yourself wives cheat, family abandons and friends sell you out. When I.m that cage it me versus the world True I might get beaten but I won't be a deceiver. IN the cage I find truth, It is only throught truth that we can find ourselves.

ill give you one guess at what syle i would suggest yes its is very bias
but you need to be well rounded.. good striking.. know how to close the distance.. good takedowns or throws.. i love throws.. but i wont go into great detail on that now.. and the basics of ground fighting will do..
good luck
make sure you enjoy the art you practice and do not do it just for fighting..

Everyone is leaving out experience. you can practice all you want to and think you have great skill. but you might not be able to fight, to carry over that skill. I have a bud who has never taken any type of class for any fighting. He has gotten the **** kicked out of him many times. But he will fight anyone and in the past few years he usuall whips anyone in a few seconds. He has the experience like no other. Id say he has gotten in close to 200 fights in the past 3 years.

I would have to say jiu jitsu and muay thai boxing would make a deadly combination. If there was a school in my area that taught jiu jitsu or muay thai I would take one of them instead of Tae Kwon Do.
I enjoy Tae Kwon Do but I believe that either of the above would be more useful in a street fight. Tae Kwon Do really lacks ground fighting techniques and punches. However my instructor is a cop so he teaches us alot of ground fighting and other moves he learned at the police academy.

qdogg that is why i also think you need to practice an art with some realistic type sparring.. not just drills or practiced movements but something where you dont know what you are going to do and the other guy is fighting back.. i wont mention styles that do a horrible job at this but i will say that this is one of the reasons why boxers are pretty deadly on the street..
good luck to all and be safe

id say brazilian ju-jit su and/or kickboxing. jeet kune do would be good too, bruce lees style!* and ive heard of burmese bando before, its like muay thai kick boxing, except it has knife defenses in it. another good one is krav maga.
but all these styles are hard to come by unless you live in a big city,so judo is a good style sinse many fights end on the ground.
*bruce lee originally took wing chun kung-fu, an ancient style. recently ive heard that this was the only style created by a woman. this means something, and then again it doesnt, but it makes sense sinse its said to "be effective with dealing with larger opponents" .
lol no way would i say practicing wing chung would make you girly, im not that shallow, but it is an intresting fact, only one style created by a women?too bad..they need it as much as we guys do.
phew...BUT, ...you dont need a black belt in anything to be a good fighter, bruce lee didnt have a black belt, and of course some black belts are way better then others...why? experience. experience is the key.
SO, honestly if you want to get better at fighting.....fight more, or get as close to real fighting as you can, like boxing or wrestling/grappling.

Boxing and Tae Kwon Doe.
Tae Kwon Doe = Disipline / Kicking (and lots of it)
Boxing = punching and using each strike to your full advantage.
or, if your instructor knows boxing (your tae kwon doe instructor), then there you go. My instructor is a 7th degree black belt, so she taught me how to box. Yea, shes like 5 feet, lethal as hell.

Just get pissed and kick his ass. ****, my first fight was like 6 monthes ago and the kid had always gotten into fights, and i tore him apart. If your out in the street bite his ear, sucker punch him, kick his balls and poke his eyes out. And i know somone will say "sucker punching is cheap"...well its his fault he didnt s ee it comming and wasnt alert enough....now if someone comes and punches you without any type of notice..like no argument and stuff..thats cheap.
