Covid-19 cases continue to rise in China's worst outbreak since Wuhan


China reported thousands of new local Covid-19 cases Sunday as the Omicron variant drove the worst outbreak in the country since Wuhan in early 2020, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).

Health officials said 2,125 cases were reported across 58 cities in 19 of 31 mainland provinces, marking the fourth consecutive day China reported more than 1,000 daily local cases. More than 10,000 cases have been reported since the latest outbreak began in early March, the NHC said.
Saturday, the commission reported 3,122 local cases -- the highest number of daily infections since the Wuhan outbreak and the first time new cases have exceeded 3,000 in a day, NHC data showed.

It won't matter here, Omicron has seemingly pretty much run its course naturally with very little impact from the "mitigations" that were dictated by our rulers. We are pretty much in the clear unless another mutation occurs significantly different enough from the first two to cause reinfection or naturally immunity wanes after some years and it becomes a seasonal cold.

The number of new cases they are reporting in China is still pretty small compared to most other places, especially given their population. I also wonder if they are prolonging the risk in their own country by the draconian suppression measures they have implemented. Here, we have both vaccination and natural exposure. In China, the severe enforced lockdowns have greatly limited any kind of natural exposure to the virus.

Hong Kong has had a sudden exponentially growing outbreak, probably already peaked, this is now leaking to China mainland who will follow suit with their own outbreaks.

According to Bloomberg, Hong Kong has 7.4 million people and a week ago they estimated and modelled (not the same figures as positive tests) that in the week up to march 7th 1.8M people had been infected but up to yesterday that jumped to 3.6M which is about half the population of HK, so on that basis it's pretty contagious
Too early to know how "bad" it is in terms of the effects on those infected.

There's a great PBS Documentary you can get on the app on a smart TV. it's 2 parts and over 3 hours. A food blogger chick in Wuhan started filming before anyone died, they still didn't know what it was, but everyone was masked, food was scarce, no one could leave the city and you had to get your temp checked just to leave your neighborhood.

They built 2 new brick and mortar hospitals in a week for the critically ill and quarantined mild cases in sports stadiums.

It makes it look surprising that it ever got out of that city.

I'm sure the Chinese state media had a hand in crafting the story, but if it's 25% true it's still a much better response than Brazil for example.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia’s indoor mask mandate is coming back. The city said Monday that it’s reached the Level 2: Mask Precautions stage of its four-tiered COVID-19 response system and it will reimpose the mask mandate on April 18.

Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole said the city will provide businesses with a one-week educational period before the mandate goes back into effect.

“We hope by having folks whenever they’re in public, indoor spaces we can get ahead of the wave and keep it from reaching a peak like we saw in January with the omicron variant,” Bettigole said. “If we can do that, we can literally save the lives of vulnerable Philadelphians. At this level of transmission, we do not believe that there is any reason to panic or enjoy any activities that we enjoy and are important to use. Our city remains open.”

I'll take a look at this when I can, but trust me, you wouldn't want to experience China's methods. We have friends in Shanghai, and right now they are forbidden to leave their apartments -- even to get food. They have to rely on the government to provide food...and you can imagine how effective that is. People are literally starving in their own apartments. Just heard the case of a man who was making a delivery and had to travel outside of Shanghai and his destination city would not let him in. In fact, no city would allow him to enter and Shanghai would not allow him to return. He drove for seven days and had no food during that time before he finally got special permission to enter a city to get food. It is absolutely horrible. I will take our methods, flawed as they may be, over China's any day.

It's interesting the very different approaches being used. Even within the UK there is no particular agreement.
In some places there is widespread testing and the main driver for control measures is the number of daily infections (or similar measure) and the aim is to try to reduce covid rates to Zero
In some places there is a different approach (notably public health England, but not all parts of UK) that infection numbers on their own are meaningless and a better indicators are some measure of the effects, like number of people needing medical treatment, hospitalisation, deaths etc. Covid-zero has never been public policy. The latest wave of (4th) vaccinations are currently only for >75 (with immunocompromised etc people to follow shortly) and being offered as bundle with flu vax. Essentially it's being treated a bit like a flu variant

The reason I mention England isn't just that I live here, it may be of interest to US because our infection rates are similar to US but we track ahead of you by a month or two. Also it's of interest as it is taking possibly the opposite approach to somewhere like Shanghai or Philadelphia.

England ended its mass public testing program program and shut public PCR testing centres and free LFTs and don't require masks except some medical/vulnerable settings, the main indicators for public health controls (like masks, lockdowns etc) aren't the estimated infections per day, but hospitalisations and outcomes etc. As a result we have ended [almost] all Covid related laws and restriction, no masking no required vaccination no lockdowns, [almost] completely back to normal, despite the fact that we had a huge spike of Covid in Dec-Jan (way more than anything previous) followed by another huge spike March-April (we are past the peak now and dropping off again). Due to changes in prevalent strains, vaccination, treatment, previous exposure, etc the daily infection rate is no longer a reliable indicator of the public health impact.

Is England's approach better that Philadelphia? I suppose we'll find out in time.
