Instability and thumbs getting in the way during sumo deadlifts

I usually do conventional deadlifts. I glide the barbell against the legs at all times. But with sumo, when my hands get to my legs, the barbell bumps forward, due to my thumb or thumbs hitting my legs. This causes instability and is annoying me. I used to use a thumbless grip to avoid this, but on heavier weights, this is not possible. How do other people manage this? I have not seen this addressed anywhere.

Just a matter of adjusting grip width to get an okay position in relation to stance.

    He is probably right.

But, perhaps, if you can consistently brush against the same hand try a reverse grip with that hand.

Or, some lifters wrap their fingers over their thumb. Very uncomfortable in the beginning but, I'm told, very effective.
